Years ago, in the parallel universe known as Earth-X, an infant was rocketed from a doomed planet and was found on Earth by a fascist dictator named Vandal Savage. The infant was given the name Karl Kant. He was raised and exploited to be the monstrous embodiment of an imagined master race. He took on the name Overman and served the Fourth Reich. But he fell in love with a reporter named Lois Lane. However, she used her position to aid the Freedom Fighters. She was soon discovered and Overman executed her by hanging. He still wept and mourned. A vulnerable monster was a threat to the Reich so Savage's scientists performed a procedure that buried his love and grief so deep in the corners of his psyche that he forgot about those feelings. After an unknown energy leaked out of a crack in a Quantum Vortex caused by Amazo in the fringes of the universe, Overman was instantly teleported from his universe and switched places with Superman, who was in the middle of a dinner date toast with Lois Lane. He shattered his glass and angrily demanded the truth from Lois Lane.

The symbol on Overman's chest matched one she saw on another doppelganger of Superman. He countered she reminded him of a reporter who stuck her nose where it didn't belong, betrayed the Great Leader, and paid with her life. She was confused and asked where Superman was. Overman had no idea who Superman was but they realized they switched places on their planets. He recalled the Great Leader often observed that every crisis provides a significant opportunity, in this case, a new world to conquer. Lane heard enough and brandished a Kryptonite Gun that Superman gave her as a failsafe. Overman was amused and compared her to an annoying insect. She countered so many times people have tried to conquer her world only to be stopped by Superman. She blasted Overman with enough Kryptonite rays to put him in a coma-like state for a few days. To her horror, he laughed and was unharmed. She dropped to her knees, let the gun go, and held out her arm as a shield in vain. She could feel the heat from his eyes blistering her skin but he suddenly stopped and flew out into the city. She alerted the Metro Tower.

Overman battled Green Lantern, Shayera Hol, Vixen, Wonder Woman, Elongated Man, Batman, and Blue Beetle in the streets of Metropolis. Overman admitted they had numbers and were powerful, but were ineffectual against him. He estimated he would conquer to planet in hours. Wonder Woman declared his arrogance was only matched by his ignorance and he had no idea what the Justice League was capable of. She stopped his punch to a standstill. Overman countered her arrogance masked the inherent weakness of her gender. She stated men like him saw the world through the veils of their own egos. J'onn J'onzz followed a telepathic trail of pain and rage and loss and devastation to Metropolis. He shouted "Enough!" and used telepathy without restraint, tearing through Overman's psyche. He realized Overman was not behind the global disappearances and was just a broken man. Overman collapsed from the ordeal. J'onzz felt bad for violating his mind. Wonder Woman believed he had no choice. He countered there was always another choice.

J'onn J'onzz, Wonder Woman, The Flash, Shayera Hol, Batman, Vixen, and Green Lantern took Overman to the Watchtower with Lois Lane. Lane interrogated Overman about Superman's location and who was behind the cosmic disturbance. Overman insisted J'onn J'onzz knew he had nothing to do with it after probing his mind and asked why he was being held prisoner. Batman pointed out he attacked Metropolis and announced his intent to conquer the world. Overman broke out of his prison and declared he was superior to all. He vowed to kill J'onn J'onzz first but Wonder Woman and Vixen struck him first with a simultaneous strike. They were not impressed with his speech. Green Lantern trapped Overman in a bubble construct then closed it in on him like shrink-wrap, leaving him completely immobilized. Overman was overcome with panic when he made eye contact with J'onn J'onzz, who threatened more telepathic invasion. Overman quickly asked him what he wanted. J'onn asked him to behave. Overman capitulated.

Green Lantern shifted the construct into a generic prison cage. J'onn was disgusted with his actions and doing it so eagerly. Lane suspected Overman could be hiding something and speculated they could be on the cusp of a Nazi invasion of their world. Batman assured her J'onn was thorough. J'onn told Lane her loss was clouding her vision. Lane assumed he read her mind. He stated he read her heart. She knew he was right and she lost her objectivity and compassion. Overman believed Superman would not survive on his Earth. J'onn believed he could telepathically follow the emanations he sensed to the source of the dimensional overlap. Shayera Hol pointed out their choices were limited so J'onn's plan was the best option. Green Lantern agreed but didn't understand why Overman was coming. Overman admitted if helping them got him back home, the sooner the better. Upon arrival at the Mirrored Room, Amazo II, the instigator of the dimensional overlaps, tapped into Overman's rage and resentment. It easily turned him into a weapon to be used against the Justice League and Justice Alliance. Overman plowed through Amazo into the mirror fragment.

Amazo II cast the battle into the landscapes of everyone's minds. The Flash and Vixen fought Overman but were soon grabbed by the throats. Batman of Earth-D fired a missile from his Whirly Bat and Batman threw at exploding Batarang at him. Overman countered with heat vision and killed both Batmen. Superman of Earth-D declared his Batman was the greatest man he ever knew, crippled by the Joker and he still found a way to fight on. Overman dismissed him as a defective weakling who deserved to die and called Superman a child for weeping for him. Superman Earth-D heard enough. He decked Overman and told him to shut the hell up. After Batman and Wonder Woman restored the Multiverse with the Life Equation, Overman ended up back in Earth-X. He surrendered and a trial was held. He wore a leg brace that neutralized his powers.

During a recess, he was allowed to visit the grave of Lois Lane. He noted after J'onn J'onzz tore through his mind and the mental blocks placed by Vandal Savage, the buried feelings he had for Lane were set free. He didn't scapegoat Savage for everything and admitted much of what he did he did willingly and enjoyed it. He vowed in the name of their love and her sacrifice that he would pay for his sins. Metallo told Overman it was time to go back to court and hear the judgment passed by the Freedom Fighters.
