Mr. Mxyzptlk is an imp from the fifth dimension, Zrfff. For centuries, Mr. Mxyzptlk has traveled to the third dimension to pit his unlimited interdimensional magic against humans. He observed Superman as the ultimate challenge and set out to prove he was the superior being. Superman quickly used Mr. Mxyzptlk's only weakness against him, to spell or otherwise reveal his name backwards. Mr. Mxyzptlk would return to Zrfff and couldn't return to Earth in 90 days when dimensions were aligned again. He found himself soundly defeated over and over, and in the process, became fixated on Superman.
Despite Gsptlsnz' protests, her boyfriend made one last challenge to Superman, make him reveal his name backwards twice in a row and he will leave Superman alone forever. If Superman failed, he would be Mr. Mxyzptlk's slave. A high speed aerial chase followed. Mr. Mxyzptlk soon resorted to creating Kryptonite to defeat Superman. However, Superman pointed out that Mr. Mxyzptlk, who shapeshifted into a rocket, had spelled out his name backwards twice in the sky. Mr. Mxyzptlk returned to Zrfff but still plotted revenge.
Some time later, Mr. Mxyzptlk approached Bizarro on his planet. Mr. Mxyzptlk convinced Bizarro that he had been played for a fool by Superman and Lois Lane. Mr. Mxyzptlk eagerly transported Bizarro to Earth to fight Superman. In the midst of battle, Mr. Mxyzptlk was returned to Zrfff by the dimension's tribunal court. They could no longer tolerate Mr. Mxyzptlk and his obsession. He was charged with breaking interdimensional laws of torturing members of lesser dimensions. Mr. Mxyzptlk was sentenced to stay in the third dimension for one dimensional interphase with no powers. If after 90 days, he could be reinstated after performing a good deed for Superman. Superman obliged and had him help fight crime with Bizarro on his planet.
