Kalibak is the son of Darkseid and is a bestial hulk of a figure. He is Darkseid's strong, but not too inteligent, enforcer. Kalibak's ultimate goal is to please his father. He feels he must gain his respect and love by destroying the object of his father's drive, Superman. Superman has routinely beaten Kalibak over the years.
Kalibak joined four other supervillains on Earth in a pact to kill Superman for revenge. However, the entire Justice League arrived and fought them in Metropolis. Batman stalled Kalibak until Superman arrived and soundly punched him out. After Superman's death, many super villains broke out of prison and rampaged throughout Metropolis. Lobo and the Justice League intervened. Afterwards, Kalibak returned to Apokolips.
The power struggle over the death of Darkseid resulted in two clear factions, Granny Goodness and Virman Vunderbarr. Virman imprisoned Kalibak and seemingly attempted to brainwash Kalibak and legitimately ascend the throne. Kalibak resisted. Granny blackmailed Mr. Miracle and Big Barda into breaking Kalibak out of the X-Pit in exchange for their old friend Oberon. Kalibak eventually agreed to a temporary alliance. Instead of turning over Kalibak, he was imprisoned on Earth and J'onn Jonzz took on his form to learn of Oberon's location.
