Like any other urban landscape, Metropolis has its share of a homeless population that they ignore. Mercy was an orphan that lived off of her wits from an early age and gaining the necessary survival skills. She eventually led a gang of street thieves.

One day, she attempted to steal the briefcase of Lex Luthor. Instead of punishing her, much less killing her, Luthor was impressed by her courage and hired her to work for his company, LexCorp.

She operated as his second, performing various tasks such as bodyguard, chauffeur and assassin among many. She is highly trained in weaponry and hand to hand combat.

Years later, when Luthor learned of his terminal cancer, he left Mercy to run the company. Luthor assumed Mercy was the only one he could trust to give back the company. Left alone to run LexCorp, Mercy realized the subtles of the parasitic relationship she shared with Luthor.
