Leonard Snart was raised by an abusive father. Snart's fondest memories were of the times he spent with his grandfather, who operated an ice truck. Eventually, Snart turned to crime. In Central City, Snart often was stopped by the Flash. Snart devised an experimental hand gun that would interfere with the Flash's super speed. The gun was accidentally irradiated and Snart discovered he created a Cold gun. Snart created a costume with a parka and goggles (which minimize the effect of the flashes given off by the gun) and became Captain Cold.
