Bryon and his younger sister were born and raised in Southfield, a suburb of Detroit in Michigan. They moved to Dakota City to live with their grandmother after their mother then father died. In the Big Bang, they were both present and received super powers. It is unknown how, but it seems likely that Byron had contact with a boom box and it became bonded with his chest. At will, Byron could unleash devastating sonic waves. The event appears to have also unleashed his concealed psychopathic urges as he believed it was a gift and opportunity to take control of their stolen lives. Taking the name Boom, he convinced his sister to steal in order to support their grandmother. The duo's first target was the new club on Warren, the Raj Mahal, and stole dozens of credit cards and any cash the patrons had on them. They attacked the WWDK-FM radio station during a $102,000 giveaway contest. Static intervened and managed to take Mirage, his sister, to the hospital and questioned her.

Boom then broke her out and planned another attack, this time at the Dakota Dome, during a Dakota Destroyers basketball game. Mirage was convinced he was insane and conjured an illusion to distract Boom. Static then sealed him in a glass dome where he was neutralized by his own ability. Boom was arrested by the Metahuman Capture Division and Mirage was taken by the Dakota Department of Child Services. Two years later, Boom resurfaced powerless after Dr. Todd spread his cure throughout Dakota. He submitted to Ebon and pledged his loyalty if Ebon restored his powers. It is unknown if Boom got his powers back aboard the S.S. Cheng or if they were just negated when Todd doused the city again afterward.
