Bernadeth is the sister of DeSaad, the late chief torturer for Darkseid. Big Barda was the original leader of the Female Furies, a specialized group of female elite soldiers gathered by Granny Goodness. Barda ultimately forsook Apokolips and fled with her lover, Mr. Miracle. Granny Goodness eventually assigned Bernadeth as the Furies' new leader despite that she was known for her aggressive and ruthless nature. Besides super strength, Bernadeth wields "faren-knives" that can heat victims from the inside out, that she can control telekinetically.
