The demon Beroul came up with a plan to open a branch office of Hell in Los Angeles, as the city contained many souls just begging to be corrupted and consumed. However, he had competition from five other demons. John Constantine began to have visions of Los Angeles from the Griffith Observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He was soon enlisted by his childhood friend Chas Chandler to check on his comatose daughter, Trisha, after he began to suspect a supernatural cause. Constantine enlisted a specialist named Nightmare Nurse to verify Trisha Chandler was a victim of possession. While trying to find out who was in her body, Nightmare Nurse was overcome by the demon Beroul. He refused to identify himself but burned "1247 Enstrom LA" into a window. John Constantine and Chas Chandler took a flight to Los Angeles. Constantine caught up to Chandler in the airport looking at a Los Angeles Daily News newspaper. The headline was about 23 new cases of coma victims.

As they took an escalator down, Constantine caught a woman staring strangely at them. Chandler asked him if he thought it was a trap. Constantine was adamant it was always a trap. They drove to 1247 Enstrom, where a mansion awaited them. Constantine clued Chandler in on the anagram in the address: monster. A butler resembling an anthropomorphic pig answered. Constantine decided not to wait, as the butler requested and looked around. He found an in-door swimming pool full of liquefying corpses. Beroul appeared and admitted to kidnapping Trisha Chandler's soul to lure Constantine to Los Angeles. He continued and shared his agenda of opening a branch office. Chandler rushed Beroul but was teleported to the roof of the Griffith Observatory. Constantine demanded a big salary and top of the line hotel accomodations for taking the job and had them granted.
