The S.S. California is a U.S. Navy submarine. While investigating an SOS beacon in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, the California was attacked by four squadrons of Atlantean soldiers. They entered and killed the entire crew. Its missiles were stolen and used by Black Manta to further incite Orm's call for war with the surface world. Cyborg was assigned by Colonel Trevor to recover the missiles from the submarine. Cyborg tried to access the submarine's security cameras but the files were corrupted. He was attacked by three Atlanteans and forced to boom away. The S.S. California was later raised and transported to S.T.A.R. Labs Metropolis for study by the Justice League. Cyborg played back his encounter to the others and Atlantis came up as the suspect when they observed one of Cyborg's assailants with gills on his neck.
