The Batsignal is a modified search light used by Commissioner Gordon to alert Batman to a new case or leads by shining his classic Bat insignia into the sky. In one instance, Gordon used the signal to update Batman on Ubu and a new location to investigate, the Gotham Coliseum. After Batman's disappearance during an encounter with the Heretic, the Batsignal went unanswered. The Batsignal stayed up for an hour, before being turned off, three times in a week. Nearly two weeks and two days later, the police and criminals were well aware of Batman's absence. Nightwing took one of Batman's older suits and answered the Batsignal in order to keep the peace in the city. Some time after the World Tech Summit, Nightwing, Batwoman, and Batwing met Batman and Robin at the Batsignal. They left and joined in a police pursuit of the Penguin.
