In the time of Camelot, Jason Blood was a young knight in service of King Arthur while Etrigan the Slayer, a rhyming demon, was enslaved to Merlin. With visions of battle-won glory dancing in his head, Blood and six other knights were dispatched with Merlin to quell Destiny's rampage. Merlin informed them Destiny forged the Dreamstone with black magic and his soul. He used it to subject people to their most terrifying nightmares and then feed off their torment. The knights descended on a village gripped in madness but they, too, fell to the Dreamstone's power. Destiny blasted the ground then impaled most of knights with the debris. Blood's horse was hit in the chest and he fell off. Blood charged Destiny but he was raised into air. Meanwhile, Merlin summoned Etrigan to turn the tide. Blood slashed at the legs of Destiny's horse then lunged but Destiny conjured his sword and stabbed Blood in his chest. Merlin promised he would release his bond if Etrigan won the battle.

Etrigan agreed to the terms of his freedom and claimed Destiny was as good as slayed. He spewed a volley of flames at Destiny. They hit the black magic glyph protecting Destiny. Etrigan leaped towards Destiny and shattered the glyph with his sword. Destiny blasted at Etrigan but he easily dodged. Destiny thrust his staff but Etrigan countered and chipped the Dreamstone. Merlin finished off Destiny with white magic. As he faded away, Destiny vowed it wasn't over. Merlin checked on Blood but Etrigan demanded his freedom. Merlin apologized that was no longer possible. Etrigan leaped at him in anger. Merlin immobilized him in mid-air and apologized. He sensed Blood and Etrigan had a shared destiny. He merged both into one body. Blood and Etrigan would remain bonded for 500 years. Over the centuries, he encountered the immortal caveman Vandal Savage and the Russian mystic Rasputin. Even in modern times, Blood was reputed to uphold the virtues of honor and loyalty.

When Jason Blood was in New Orleans for a night, Amanda Waller was finally able to book an appointment with him. Blood decided to use Waller as the means to find the Amaurex Key for him. With the key, he believed he would be freed of Etrigan at long last. Blood examined the Get Out of Hell Free Card and verified it was authentic. He added it was indeed infernal. Waller asked why it looked like a business card and if it does what it says. Blood held it over a lit candle and revealed what it looked like two thousand years ago, a triangle, and five thousand years ago, a pebble. He decided to test it and put it into the flame. Blood realized the card had already been redeemed and thus, it was useless. He inquired how she came to possess it. Waller stated it was confidential and very messy. Madame Xanadu entered the room and used her deck of Xanadu tarot cards to reveal the truth, she sent her Suicide Squad to find it and half of them died. Waller was impressed then pulled out an old drawing depicting Merlin merging Blood and Etrigan into one.

Waller wanted to know what happened to the card. Xanadu revealed Deadshot and Bronze Tiger were the last to touch the card. Waller realized Deadshot gave it to Tiger then asked Blood if there was a way to reactivate it. Xanadu started to undress to build her weaving spell. In reality, the spell was to obscure Blood from the other realm so his plan wouldn't be discovered. Blood said there wasn't and didn't know of the existence of anymore. Xanadu revealed Waller had a terminal condition. Waller had another question but Xanadu declared she wanted a sorcerer to aid on of her teams. Waller denied it then asked her to put her clothes back on. Blood recalled her attempt to harness the Enchantress wrecked a lot of Midway City a while back. He advised her science couldn't solve everything. Waller then asked about a figure stalking her. Blood was concerned it wasn't Deadman nor Gentleman Ghost. Xanadu touched her face and screaming upon gleaning it was the Spectre who marked her. Waller asked if it was Death.

Blood clarified it was something else, an avenging spirit who seeks the very wicked. Blood wondered why it was taking so long to take her. Xanadu implied the good that came from Waller's dark methods tipped the scales and kept him at bay. Blood agreed. Waller was unnerved with them undressed and questioned why it had to be done. Blood believed Spectre couldn't be stopped and mused he would have made her lose the Hell Card even if it was unredeemed. Waller heard enough and was ready to get a drink. She thought about sending the Suicide Squad to go kill whoever was causing global warming to buy herself more time. Blood suddenly recalled the Amaurex Key, a similar relic, that was originally commissioned by Vandal Savage and found a book about it he took from Rasputin. Xanadu pointed out karma was at work. Blood suggested to Waller she sould start with any connections to Savage's underground society. Waller asked Blood why he didn't serve a country again. Blood retorted it didn't end so well for him and the court when he was a Knight of the Round Table.

Waller ascertained everyone has their demons. Blood reiterated he literally had one but everyone else tortured themselves for some unknown reason. Waller vowed to stay alive and left. Blood found a starting point for Waller's search but had to convey it in person. Several Rougarou, old enemies of Blood's, discovered his location. Rather than risk Etrigan burning down the French Quarters, a sacred site, Blood and Xanadu left New Orleans. He left behind a recorded message activated by lighting a candle. Waller later found the note and lit the candle. Blood's head appeared and he revealed what happened then instructed her to meet him at the Granary Burying Grounds in Boston the next day at twilight, where he would give her information and secure her a guide - a spirit. The Rougarou revealed themselves and fought the Suicide Squad outside. The Spectre interrupted Blood's message and told Waller her time was coming and the good she achieved didn't balance her dark deeds so she was doomed to suffer an eternity at the hands of the countless she wronged.

Blood left a note for Deadman at his favorite bar. Following Jason Blood's instructions, Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad went to the Granary Burial Grounds at twilight. Blood cast a few repelling spells to drive off sightseers to ensure the grounds would be clear for the meeting then found them. Blood explained twilight was a transition time in graveyards and years ago, the headstones were rearranged in rows with no consideration of where the respective bodies lay. As a result, the grounds were a spiritually chaotic locale. He gave everyone Spectral Lens and stated he needed their eyes. Blood explained that all entities connected to the grounds were visible despite their wishes, for half an hour, in a disoriented state and cut off from the greater spirit world. They looked ground for the ghost of a blacksmith while they waited for Deadman, the guide Blood arranged for. Blood told Waller she would need a true heir of Savage once they had the location. Waller informed him Scandal Savage would be joining them the next day.

Harley Quinn sighted the smith and gave chase. Before Blood could cast a binding spell, she was surprisingly struck by a spirit. The spirit turned out to be Gentleman Ghost. He warned them what they wanted wasn't for the living and promised to rectify it by killing them. Blood recognized him and told him their operation didn't concern him. Gentleman Ghost countered, it didn't concern him either. Gentleman Ghost sent ghosts loyal to him after Waller, Blood, and the squad. Waller tested her Nth Metal Jacket Bullets and confirmed they were effective against ghosts. She ordered the squad to run past the gate but Blood instructed her to shoot Gentleman Ghost. It was too late, he possessed Bane and punched Waller. Blood warned the squad to stay back. Harley charged and got knocked off her feet. Blood tried to fool him by casting an illusion of Etrigan around himself. Gentleman Ghost stated he was bound to safeguard the bearer of the Amaurex Key then saw through Blood's ruse. He ordered several ghosts to tear the illusion apart.

Gentleman Ghost possessed Dr. Polaris and dispatched the rest of the squad. He took Waller's gun, still loaded with Nth Metal, and took aim at Blood. Deadman finally arrived and stopped Gentleman Ghost. Harley found the ghost of the blacksmith and Deadman pulled him up from his grave. He told the story of his part in finishing the key. Waller found the story useless but Blood thought he told them everything they needed to find Savage's chamber. They discovered the host of the key was Solomon Grundy and tracked him to Maurepas Swamp in Louisiana. Waller sent a message to Blood requesting his presence. During the skirmish, Waller realized the Spectre was just an illusion and it only spoke when Blood was near. After Dr. Polaris removed the key from Grundy's chest, the action created a tear in the physical world and the afterlife - creating a limbo. Blood appeared and mused it was only temporary. Deadman pointed out they could have used him any point before. Waller tried to make contact and warn the squad to stay away from Blood.

Blood became insistent about finding the key so he could prepare it as Waller needed. Scandal Savage found the key but stopped her short. She fashioned a duplicate with her mud then handed it to Blood. Waller arrived too late. Deadshot took aim but deduced he shouldn't fire at Blood when he held the key. Blood admitted Xanadu's spell dance and the meeting at Granary at twilight was all to hide his involvement from the other realm so that Etrigan wouldn't know of his plan. Blood decided to test the key and transformed. To his shock, he continued changing into Etrigan. Clay admitted to the ruse. Etrigan was amused and told Clay he was indebted to her then teleported away. Harley thought Blood's rhymes were fresher than Etrigan's.

Jason Blood learned the Demons Three were in possession of the larger chunk of the Dreamstone. He took part in a poker game with them and John Constantine at the Lucky Devil Casino in Las Vegas. The Demons moved to bust them both since the next group of "friends" were due to arrive. Blood was surprised to hear one of them was David Copperfield. Constantine pointed out Copperfield owned Musha Cay, a chain of islands, and dated Claudia Schiffer. Abnegazar went all in. Constantine raised him with the House of Mystery and its contents. Abengazar called with the chipped Dreamstone, a working Soul Catcher, Algid's Ice Spiker, and the Ghaurrazzi. Blood folded and left the table. Abnegazar and Constantine both cheated with magic and a fight broke out. Blood hid behind a column and refused to help Constantine. Constantine gambled to save his life and incanted. The spell forced Blood to change into Etrigan. He spoke the words, "Gone, gone, the form of man. Arise the demon Etrigan." Ghast and Rath were intimidated and tried to shift back to using just words.

Abnegazar was irritated and ordered them to kill everyone. Etrigan stomped Abnegazar then spewed flames on Ghast and Rath then chopped their heads off. They swore revenge on Constantine. Etrigan stabbed Abnegazar in the chest. He fell to his knees then dropped into a portal. Ghast and Rath followed. Etrigan then changed back to Blood. Infuriated, Blood punched Constantine. He feared Etrigan could have gone on a killing spree. He yelled at Constantine for never thinking or weighing the cost of a decision. Constantine insisted he did and it was totally worth it. He took the Demons' relics and returned to the House of Mystery. Blood called him a world class bastard. The House teleported away. Five days later, Blood went to Ritchie Simpson's Washington D.C. home in the hope he possessed a relic that could gain access to the House so he could steal the Dreamstone. He found Simpson on the floor near death. Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, and Batman returned to seek Simpson's help in identifying a ring.

Blood tried to help Simpson but the others burst in. Suspecting he would be blamed, Blood ran away. Constantine chased after Blood and bound him in chains and gagged his mouth. Just as Shrouds began to pull Simpson's soul, Batman revived him by injecting a syringe into his chest. Simpson and Blood were taken to the House of Mystery. Constantine removed the bonds and gag under threat he would fill Blood's lungs with bile if he tried to summon Etrigan. Blood explained himself then revealed his origins. He joined them in the search for Simpson's patsy, Felix Faust. Zatanna convinced Swamp Thing to help locate Faust's Observatory of the Cosmos but could not get him to join them in battle. Blood pointed out he was once human like he was. Swamp Thing stated he was no longer human then speculated whatever was being planned was a kind of justice against humanity for destroying the Green. He returned to the Green and teleported away. Blood transformed into Etrigan, molded flames into his sword, then leaped towards the Observatory.

Etrigan burst through the ceiling on the unsuspecting Faust. Faust refused to stoop to brawling with a demon and summoned the Demons Three in their more massive forms. Etrigan punched one out then snapped another's neck. After Faust froze Zatanna, Etrigan tackled him. Faust countered and sent a dagger into Etrigan's chest. Etrigan was forced to change back into Blood. After Faust was defeated by Zatanna, Blood pointed out Faust could have summoned the Demons Three whenever he wanted and took the Dreamstone. Batman deduced Simpson was the threat all along. They returned to the House of Mystery but they were too late. Destiny revealed himself and took over Simpson's body after the Dreamstone was reunited. Blood estimated Destiny would take D.C. by midnight and the Eastern Seaboard by dawn. After Deadman and Green Lantern failed against Destiny, Blood transformed into Etrigan once more. Constantine cut off Etrigan's rhyme and yelled at him to top the git. Etrigan called him a killjoy and leaped after Destiny.

Etrigan landed on Destiny's force shield and bashed at it. Destiny returned fire. Etrigan leaped away and conjured his sword. Destiny blasted Etrigan and severed Merlin's spell. Blood and Etrigan were split back into two beings. With little choice, Constantine tricked Swamp Thing into attacking Destiny but he was defeated, too. Constantine came up with a Trojan Horse scheme and started insulting Destiny. Destiny fell for it and pulled Constantine into his force shield. Deadman emerged from Constantine's body and possessed Destiny. While Destiny tried to fight back, his shield dissipated and he fell to the streets. Once Deadman was ejected, Blood impaled Destiny from behind with Etrigan's sword and knocked the Dreamstone out. Blood informed him Merlin sent his regards. Constantine purged Destiny from Simpson's body and Batman blew up the Dreamstone. After Simpson's soul was taken to Hell by Shrouds, Blood's fatal wound returned and Etrigan caught him as he fell. Constantine tried to apologize but Blood found it to be a welcome end.

A few days later, Blood was buried near where his birth village used to be. Etrigan, Constantine, and Zatanna gathered. Etrigan admitted he knew of no man he would want more for a brother. He bid Blood farewell then teleported away. Zatanna placed a bouquet on his tombstone.
