Mr. Mxyzptlk is a nearly omnipotent imp with a mischevious streak. He often leaves his home dimension to torture what he views as lesser beings. One such being he was defeated by was Superman when he tricked Mxyzptlk into saying his name backwards. King Brpxz, ruler of Imp World, and Mr. Mxyzptlk got into an argument about who was faster - Flash or Superman. They teleported to Earth, took the heroes and interleaved Metropolis and Central City on Imp World. They were forced to participate in a foot race but Mxyzptlk stipulated flying was banned. Mxyzptlk added refusing to race or stepping off the path would result in a loss and their city would stay. Brpxz revealed he winner would any wish he wanted. They were given a non-sensical city map by Mxyzptlk and instructed to follow the "Yellow Trick Road". They encountered challenges along the way crafted by Mxyzptlk as a test of using more than physical speed.
The first challenge was an area of heavy gravity. Brpxz didn't think either would have an advantage but Mxyztplk countered Superman had his super strength to push ahead. Brpxz blew Kryptonite dust onto Superman. Mxyzptlk didn't think that was fair but Brpxz countered he said to exploit any weakness. Mxyptlk contended it would kill him. Brpxz didn't think it was enough to. After Flash and Superman entered an area of absolute zero temperature, Brpxz didn't think either would get ahead. Mxyzptlk believed it was a test of speed of thought as well as action. Superman started using his heat vision. Brpxz thought it a waste of all the ice gathered. Mxyzptlk predicted Superman was running on fumes in absolute darkness but Flash couldn't see whereas Superman still had his super vision abilities. Near the finish line, they were encased in diamonds. Brpxz believed Flash would match his atomic vibrations to the vibrations of the atoms in the diamond and phase out.
Instead, he vibrated his molecules out of phase and created a pulse that shattered the diamond. Flash wished for both cities to be returned to Earth exactly how they were before they were taken, including people's memories, and for both imps to leave. Brpxz ordered Mxyzptlk to grant the wish, give Flash his trophy, and leave Superman and Flash their memories. Mxyzptlk hoped Flash would display the trophy in a place of honor where everyone could see and ask about Superman's humiliating defeat. Brpxz and Mxyzptlk vanished.
