Coluan refugees barely landed their space ship on a harsh planet. The refugees were wrongly interpreted as invaders and attacked by the local primitives. A conflict arose and the first Kryptonians conquered the Coluans. They took from their enemy the secrets of strength, of flight, and they turned their dying star into Rao, the living sun. The Coluans made a "sacrifice" and were converted into eternal robot servants of the Kryptonian Empire. The empire was built on the principle that it is always the fate of the weak to serve the strong. 10,000 years passed. Clark Kent was subjected to a simulation of the first contact between Kryptonians and Coluans by the stewards of the Fortress of Solitude. If Kent showed the stewards he had the same ancient strength within him and conquered the Coluans, they would restore his super powers. A fight soon broke out against five suited Coluans. Kent's powers began to manifest but he refused to kill them. The leader tackled Kent off a cliff.
Both survived the fall but the Coluan's left arm was hurt. He attempted to kill Kent with a rock and Kent's own sword but Kent gained the upper hand. He again resisted killing and instead used the sword to create a make shift sling for the Coluan's arm. They made the journey back to the Coluan ship but were attacked by a large creature. The Coluan was bitten but Kent managed to throw the creature off a cliff. Kent carried the unconscious Coluan back to his ship. He realized they were refugees and tried to reason with them. The chief steward implored him to show his strength and kill them. Kent disagreed that was what strength was. The Coluan awoke and told the others what happened. They lowered their weapons. The chief steward was angry Kent befriended the Coluans and took Kent's actions as an insult, a rejection of their offer. Kent asked what the Coluans called him at the end. The chief steward translated it as "friend" and declared he failed.
Kent pointed out he defeated the leader and won them over. The chief steward clarified he sent Kent to dominate, not befriend because it was always the fate of the weak to serve the strong and the entire trajectory of the Kryptonian Empire was built on that single principle. Kent rhetorically asked where that empire ended up. The chief steward was done being questioned. It believed the weak serving the strong was the order of the universe and if it wasn't, what was the point of their sacrifice and everything they did for the past 10,000 years. Kent realized the chief steward was the Coluan he carried up the mountain. The chief steward confirmed it and stated they were eternal servants of the empire. Kent was horrified at what was done to them. The chief steward felt insulted by his pretense of mercy and vowed he would die for it.
