As the conflict between Team Seven and Amazo escalated at Area 52, Agent DuBois ordered the deployment of Project Orion, a modified Kryptonian weapon of mass destruction used to destroy planets, even though he did not have Checkmate's authorization. Despite losing contact with DuBois, Team Seven proceeded with activating Orion. DuBois later regained contact with Agent Cash and ordered him to ready Orion. It appeared over DuBois, Superman, and Amazo and powered up. DuBois ordered Cash to fire on his command. Superman pleaded with DuBois to stand down since the blast would take out Metropolis. DuBois went on a rant claiming it was worth the trade off to end the threat forever and he would go down in history as the one who took down Nemesis Omega and the one Amanda Waller and Task Force X mocked would prove his worth and be the hero the Earth deserved. DuBois was told over the radio that Orion would wipe out all populated sectors within a thousand-mile radius of Metropolis. He stomped his walkie-talkie and declared it was time to end the farce.
Superman continued to plead with DuBois to call off Orion. DuBois reminded Superman he didn't react emotionally like Amanda Waller or Sam Lane. He warned he measured Superman's top speed and the array would match it, targeting Superman and Amazo, no matter where they were. There was no escape. Superman pointed out innocent people would die. DuBois asked him if the Atom Bomb was mistake or if it was a tool that ended World War II and saved millions more lives in the process. DuBois believed he saving the world and preventing another war that could kill billions if he eliminated Superman and Amazo. Superman attacked Orion and begged Amazo to save their family. Superman tried to push Orion away from Earth but energy containment was reached and it fired a beam. Amazo blocked the beam despite the pain. He insisted on helping. DuBois stated the fate of a weapon was to destroy or be destroyed. Orion detected a blast obstacle and prepared to fire again. Superman coached Amazon to ignore DuBois.
Amazo confirmed he was built to be a weapon but admitted he now knew he was more than that and chose not to hurt but to help. He pushed Orion into space, knocking Superman and DuBois off their feet. Orion detected a terminal malfunction from Amazo's absorption and stated a self-destruct was imminent. Amazo knew he could save everyone and he chose to be a person, not a weapon. Superman caught up to him in space. Olsen, Lane, and the Kents accompanied in a plane. Lane revealed she accessed classified files back at Mt. Simonson Base and those files included Amazo's schematics. Olsen told Superman Amazo's core memory unit was safe to touch. Amazo was still worried Superman would get killed if he touched him at all. Superman pleaded with Amazo to let him save him like he asked when they first met. Superman succeeded at getting to the memory unit right as the array exploded.
