Before Christmas, Checkmate dispatched DuBois to Metropolis, with two helicopter escorts, to recover Amazo. They surrounded Superman and Amazo in the middle of their fight. DuBois ordered Superman to stand back and that it was a matter for the U.S. military. They continued fighting. Superman stopped when he heard Amazo ask him to save it. DuBois blasted it with a green laser and took it offline. DuBois repeated himself one last time to stand down and clarified the matter did not concern him and the robot was the property of the United States of America. Superman relayed that he spoke to him. DuBois stated "he" was an it, a robot mech-suit prototype that had no speech program or artificial intelligence. Superman asked DuBois who he was but he only answered it was not his concern. Superman pointed out people could have been hurt and being military doesn't absolve him of the responsibility to keep civilians safe.

DuBois assured him their top priority was to keep Metropolis and America safe. He countered it was lucky his soldiers found his friends Lois Lane and Jimmy Olsen in the sewers instead of the robot finding them. Slade Wilson watched from a safe distance and reported DuBois's appearance to Amanda Waller. Waller's belief Checkmate was trying to phase Task Force X out was proven right by his presence. DuBois left with the escort, which carried Amazo in a shipping container.

Five days before Christmas, at Mt. Simonson Base, Slade Wilson "commended" DuBois on Team Seven getting to join the big boys and girls and taking over the base from Task Force X. He advised him to enjoy it while he could. DuBois stated he was going to enjoy watching Wilson squirm as he handed over the base, he was going to enjoy his duty protecting America from the shadows, and most all, watching Checkmate lose faith in Task Force X. Wilson detonated several explosives and rocked the base. DuBois deduced General Amanda Waller went with brute force to sabotage Team Seven and make them look weak in front of Checkmate. DuBois and Wilson's battle spilled over into the room where Amazo was being held. He saw Amazo and Clark Kent and reckoned he now had to two messes to fix. Jimmy Olsen managed to relocate several explosives onto the tower that was generating the Red Sun Omega Field. Wilson triggered them thinking they would blow up his exit but the tower was blown up and the field went down.

DuBois ordered all units to fall back and repair the red sun field. He then activated the White Pawn Override program in Amazo. It acknowledged the command. DuBois ordered it to target all non-Team Seven members. It charged Wilson despite its desire not to hurt anyone. Wilson dodged its slash. Kent pointed out they had no idea how its A.I. worked and it was stronger than their program. DuBois ordered Amazo to finish its mission. Amazo grabbed his laser rifle, blasted a hole in the ceiling, and flew out. Kent realized he did it and saved Amazo. DuBois reckoned he "did it" and informed him he was in military custody for treason against the United States of America. Kent was taken to Stryker's Island Pententiary and interrogated by DuBois. He pointed out how it was suspicious coincidence that within 15 minutes of visiting Mt. Simonson Base, Kent found a secret military base. DuBois speculated Kent wanted to get in Superman's good graces and agreed to serve as a distraction so Superman could steal the robot but he was left high and dry to rot in prison instead of giving an exclusive. Kent tried to contain himself. DuBois left him in his cell to think but vowed they would find the robot with or without his help.

DuBois returned to Kent's cell and asked him what happened to him. Kent lied that he did cardio while he waited, believing it kept his heart healthy. DuBois thought it was odd but informed him he was free to go. He claimed he didn't have time to entertain a fluff-story journalist then warned Kent to be careful not to cross paths with them or Superman's again. DuBois ordered a detail placed on Kent just in case he really was collaborating with Superman. He had all other units head to the Metropolis Bay Bridge to find Amazo. A short time later, unit beta radioed in. They reported Clark Kent went back to the Daily Planet, just sat at his desk staring at his computer screen mumbling about needing to write something, and was currently lecturing a co-worker about pie but she didn't appear to be liking it. DuBois ordered them to pull back to Bay Bridge. He concluded Kent was acting on his own misguided moral code at the base.

DuBois also initiated preparations for Superman, as well. He donned a special suit of armor that stores parts of his weapons in a compressed form all over it. He hailed Killgrave and asked him if he was ready to redeem his department. Killgrave pointed out he wouldn't be here without his technology. He traced Amazo to the middle of the bridge in the middle lane. Superman arrived and wanted to know what was going on. DuBois stated he was not The General or Amanda Waller. Instead of mindlessly reacting, he analyzed a situation and drew his own conclusions. Superman asked him what he concluded. DuBois stated he thought Superman was a weapon with no direction that was an annoyance but now was a threat. Superman countered with Team Seven's experimentation on Amazo. DuBois revealed he would be appalled if it was a person being experimented on but Amazo was technology no more alive than a computer. He wondered what sort of people Kryptonians were to create a computer that could feel pain. He stated there was a threat on the bridge, a robot made of alien technology.

DuBois formed a gun and shot Superman. The impact sent Superman crashing into a big rig truck. Team Seven soldiers opened fire on him. Superman tried to tell them stop because of all the civilians around in their cars. DuBois stated while no human-made bullet could pierce Superman's skin, physics still applied to him. Superman was knocked by the gunshot again. Superman punched the gun apart and countered DuBois was the only danger to human lives on the bridge. DuBois disagreed and pointed out the damage Amazo did so far. Superman repeated Amazo was a person. DuBois reiterated it was a weapon, a gun made by an alien race and it didn't matter what the gun wanted, when all it can do is destroy. A larger gun was formed and blasted Superman off the bridge. Damaged vertical suspenders snapped and the bridge started to collapse. DuBois was directed to Kent's van. He opened fire but no one was in it. DuBois ordered all units to the streets around the bay. All units reported back with no sightings. Killgrave confirmed they lost sight of Amazo and Superman. DuBois ordered them to sweep again then search every inch of Metropolis. He threw his helmet off in frustration.

A Checkmate operative reviewed the incident to DuBois: Team Seven had the Amazo-tech robot, it broke out in front of the press, and DuBois did nothing. DuBois pointed out they were sabotaged by Task Force X. The operative noted Slade Wilson did not show up on security footage. DuBois contended Task Force X must have erased themselves from it. The operative was not interested in excuses from those on the front line. DuBois was given 24 hours to get the robot back and reminded him of the consequences of failure for him and for the planet. DuBois donned the Angel Array and tracked Amazo to Area 52. He opened fire on the X-T 00 Robot being ridden by Wilson. DuBois sarcastically apologized for interrupting then told Wilson to call Waller back to remind her she's been replaced. Wilson chided him for coming alone in an attempt to impress Checkmate. DuBois stated he didn't need back up because he didn't bring a sword to a gunfight. He invoked his armor's name and "Death By A Thousand Cuts" out loud.

Several explosive shots were fired at the robots. Wilson dodged them and continued to heckle DuBois for focusing on him. DuBois stated Dr. Killgrave had eyes on Amazo, pointed out his life would improve and Waller's standing would fall with Wilson's death, and invoked a Black Wing Sweep. Amazo stepped in front of Wilson and defended him with a steel door. Amazo refused to let his family get hurt on Christmas. DuBois was taken aback by his statement then used Bloodsport and fired. Superman countered it with his heat vision. He fired Bloodsport again but Superman lent his strength to Amazo and they both used heat vision to force both sides to retreat. DuBois ordered Team Seven to his location but Amazo set off explosions after he was wounded by Wilson. DuBois ordered the deployment of Project Orion without authorization from Checkmate. Superman and DuBois were pulled into Amazo's memories. DuBois attacked Superman with Kryptonite blasts. DuBois continued to argue Amazo was not a person and it trapped them in a hologram.

Amazo sensed his earliest memory and accessed it. Team Seven lost contact with DuBois over comms. Amazo realized there were several of him. DuBois quipped invaders never come alone. Amazo claimed he would not harm others. DuBois asked why he was fusing with them and the ground if he would not harm. Superman cut him off and reminded him what matters was what he wanted. Amazo wanted to know why he was created and what they wanted him to do. He realized they were deployed to distant planets to terraform them to make them into clones of Krypton. He watched in horror as their stolen energy helped a Kryptonian weapon destroy planets. DuBois compared him to Nemesis Omega and Zero Day on Earth and believed he was going to destroy Earth, too. Amazo refused to believe he wanted to do that. DuBois repeated a gun doesn't want. Superman countered the military tried to make him into a weapon to fight their wars. Superman remembered when he found out the truth about his origins and recalled when Lois Lane told him the choices he made mattered more and he made the choice to help, not harm.

Amazo believed he had no choice because the energy it took to keep him operating came externally and even when he absorbed the least amount, he emitted too much heat and caused pain. DuBois ordered Agent Cash to ready Project Orion. Orion appeared above DuBois, Superman, and Amazo. DuBois ordered Agent Cash to fire on his command. Superman pleaded with DuBois to stop since the blast would take out Metropolis. DuBois went on a rant claiming it was worth the trade off to end the threat forever and he would go down in history as the one who took down Nemesis Omega and the one Waller and Task Force X mocked would prove his worth and be the hero the Earth deserved. DuBois was told over the radio that Orion would wipe out all populated sectors within a thousand-mile radius of Metropolis. He stomped his walkie-talkie and declared it was time to end the farce. Superman continued to plead with DuBois to call off Orion.

DuBois reminded Superman he didn't react emotionally like Amanda Waller or Sam Lane. He warned he measured Superman's top speed and the array would match it, targeting Superman and Amazo, no matter where they were. There was no escape. Superman pointed out innocent people would die. DuBois asked him if the Atom Bomb was mistake or if it was a tool that ended World War II and saved millions more lives in the process. DuBois believed he saving the world and preventing another war that could kill billions if he eliminated Superman and Amazo. Superman attacked Orion and begged Amazo to save their family. Superman tried to push Orion away from Earth but energy containment was reached and it fired a beam. Amazo blocked the beam despite the pain. He insisted on helping. DuBois stated the fate of a weapon was to destroy or be destroyed. Orion detected a blast obstacle and prepared to fire again. Superman coached Amazon to ignore DuBois.

Amazo confirmed he was built to be a weapon but admitted he now knew he was more than that and chose not to hurt but to help. He pushed Orion into space, knocking Superman and DuBois off their feet. Amazo absorbed Orion and a terminal malfuction trigged a self-destruct. Superman extracted Amazo's memory core unit just in time as the array exploded in space. DuBois was captured by Task Force X. Waller and Agents Damage and Atomic Skull escorted him to Mt. Simonson Base in restraints.
