In the 18th century, several slaves taken from Africa revolted and their ship went adrift. It entered a transdimensional island named Marzal that appears once every 200 years on Earth, sometimes. The island was seen as a safe haven and strictly guarded from outsiders. Centuries later, Troy Stewart was born with the power to project sonic screams. He was made the island's guardian and named Tyroc, which translates to "Scream of the Devil."
He encountered the Legion of Superheroes when they chased a jewel thief into Marzal. After they saved his life and caught the thieves, Tyroc grew to trust them and accepted their offer to become the seventh member.
