In the 40th century, the golden age of peace was interrupted by the coming of Imperiex. Years later, the universe was in shambles. A small pocket of resistance on Earth managed to secure a genetic strand of Superman and sample of Kryptonite. They laced the Kryptonite into Superman's genomes and made a clone invulnerable to the substance. Kell-El was born as the universe's last hope and quickly became an experienced warrior.

In need of reinforcements, he utilized a Warp Key and recruited several members of the Legion of Superheroes to help him destroy Imperiex. However, when Imperiex escaped to the past, Kell-El returned with the Legion to end the war once and for all. During his tenure with the Legion, Kell-El developed compassion for life and learned what was required to be a real hero. When he was given the opportunity to destroy Imperiex by killing a child who would one day contribute to Imperiex' origins, Kell-El refused.

When everyone was shocked to see Brainiac kill Imperiex, Kell-El was stunningly remorseful because he felt that killing Imperiex was his life's purpose. He later helped save Superman's life with a transfusion of his blood which contained the immunity to Kryptonite and turned the tide against Brainiac. Before returning home to the 41st century, Kell-El was officially sworn in as a Legion member.
