On the galactic intelligence scale, Querl Dox is a 12 where the average Coluan is a 10 and an everage human is a 6. From the beginning of Colu's second free era, the title of Brainiac was given to those who contributed a great intellectual feat to Coluan society. Dox was the fifth to do so and did it at the age of 12. However, he is ashamed to admit he is a direct descendant of the original Brainiac and feared its evil resided within him.
The Coluan Hive tolerated his uniqueness and allowed Brainiac 5 to separate from the Hive and leave Colu to conduct further research at Earth's Time Institute. He soon invented the Time Bubble, the new primary mode of time travel. He was secretly more concerned with understanding humanity as Coluan society was semi-organic. After witnessing the Legion of Superheroes in action, he applied for membership and was accepted. Nicknamed "Brainy," he went on to invent the Legion Flight Ring and Cloaking Belt. In an effort to streamline Legion operations, Brainiac 5 constructed the Computo database and integrated it into every piece of Legion technology.
Over the years, Brainiac 5 merged with dangerous technology during missions. He did so freely because he carried a back up disk of himself. As another precaution, he also kept a sample of Kryptonite in his lab vault. It was lost during the battle with Drax. Brainiac 5 came to admire Superman. Sometime between the 30th and 41st century, it was recorded that Brainiac 5 turned evil and nearly wiped out mankind. When Imperiex arrived in the past, he took this fact into account and secretly hacked into Brainiac 5 and activated the original Brainiac's programming. All that was left was to manipulate the Legionnaire into releasing security protocols that kept Brainiac at bay. The Kandor case provided such as chance. With information from Brainiac, he was able to turn Kandor's sun yellow, drive off Imperiex, and help restore Krypton.
Brainiac 5 soon gave into his ancestor's influence when Dominators attacked the Legion Battle Cruiser. Taking a calculated loss, Brainiac 5 shut down the minds of the Dominator warriors like a computer. He easily escaped the Cruiser and joined Imperiex. However, Brainiac was in control and killed the warrior. While Superman and Superman X fought Brainiac, he regained control and purged Brainiac from his mind. As a result, Brainiac 5 became organic. Ashamed of his actions, he resigned from the Legion to sort out his future.
