Carlos Francesco was the biggest crime boss in Gotham City. Francesco's nephew Paris Franz staged the theft of an armored car with an accomplice Lonny and four of Francesco's men who claimed they could disable its tracker. They failed and were pursued by police then by Batman and Batgirl. The armored car and Francesco's men were recovered. Francesco was out $100,000, the failed theft was all over the news, he lost some men, and Batman was looking into him. He ordered Franz to pay him back the $100,000 or else he would become a "distant relative." Franz in turn decided to break into a building owned by the Francesco family since 1929. He believed Francesco was an artifact going extinct and he was the next evolution - brains, nerve, and tech. He got away with money stored at the building. Francesco ordered a hit on Franz. Franz, meanwhile, managed to access all of Francesco's offshore bank accounts. On Saturday, Francesco was shot to death then hidden in his office closet. Franz led Batgirl on a "scavenger hunt" and she discovered the body. The city braced itself for another gang war.
