The Liberator is a series of planet-destroying explosives used by the Red Lantern Corps. They are stored at the base of the Shard, mobile headquarters of the Corps. When the detonation sequence is started, the countdown has a duration of five minutes. Once it concludes, lasers are fired and they set off a plutonium cache. The Red Lantern Corps launched one into Colony 12 to draw out the Green Lanterns. The Liberator then displayed a holographic projection of Atrocitus, leader of the Red Lantern Corps, who issued an ultimatum to the natives. Shyir Rev was unable to disarm the Liberator and held off the lasers to give everyone extra time to evacuate the planet. Eventually, Rev's construct wavered. Rev was instantly killed and Colony 12 was destroyed.
After Prince Ragnar took over Betrassus by force, his new Red Lantern comrades arrived and planted a Liberator on the planet. Hal Jordan, Kilowog, Queen Iolande, and a resistance led by Kothak led a daring attack on the Liberator. With time running out and things looking bleak, the Green Lanterns were suddenly given an extreme power boost by a Blue Power Battery planted on the Interceptor by Ganthet. The three Green Lanterns launched the Liberator into space where it detonated without harming anyone or anything. Atrocitus later deployed three Liberators within the Maelstrom and artificially created a path wide enough for his armada to pass through. The Red Lanterns later attempted to destroy the Anti-Monitor with several Liberators but the robot blasted and converted them into anti-matter before they reached it.
