The power rings of the Green Lantern Corps are considered to be the most powerful weapon in the universe. Thousands of the years ago, the Guardians of the Universe forged this technology as part of their campaign to police the known 3600 space sectors. Those who are chosen to wield a ring are usually at the scrutiny of the Guardians. The power of the rings are limited only by the willpower of its user. This willpower is most important in the generation of electromagnetic solid light constructs that act as defensive and offensive measures of the Green Lantern.

In addition, the rings provide its user's flight, personal force fields, uniforms, energy scanning, universal language translation, recorders, storage, and communication. It also follows voice commands and can be summoned remotely. These features lead many to conclude that the ring is an advanced miniature computer. As a failsafe, when a Green Lantern is killed in action, the ring automatically seeks out a successor or returns to the Guardians on Oa.

Despite its omnipotence, the rings have its share of weaknesses. The power rings can hold a full charge for 24 hours then must be recharged by a Green Lantern's personal battery, the central Power Battery or an alternate source of Green Energy such as a Manhunter skull. After inserting the ring into the battery, the Green Lantern counts the time needed for a full charge by reciting the Green Lantern Oath. An unusual yellow mineral discovered by the Spider Guild in Frontier Space has a side effect of nullifying the Green Power Ring. Another limit of the ring is how it translates languages for its user to understand. For instance, rhyming in one alien language doesn't translate to rhyming in another.
