Gil Broome was inspired by a Green Lantern, one who wore a red shirt and cape, who saved his planet to become a hero himself. Broome discovered a rare element he named Hardtofindium and used it to fuel his steam powered suit, invented by partner Lady Catherine. Broome became the Steam Lantern just in time to stand up to the Anti-Monitor. Steam Lantern used all his power on it but was beneath the Anti-Monitor's notice. At the same time, Duke Nigel fired off a ray to send it to another universe. The people believed Steam Lantern vanquished the villain and hailed him a hero. Nigel was enraged the Lantern stole the credit and glory and branded him as a radical. Steam Lantern and Lady Catherine continued to rebel against Nigel's tyrannical rule, despite his guilt.
A few months later, Broome and Catherine were aided by another Green Lantern, Hal Jordan. Upon comparing notes, they attempted to reopen the transdimensional rift but were captured by Duke Nigel. As the planet's star died out for good, Nigel confessed his failures. The four set out to send Jordan back home as their last act before the planet froze over. In the process, Jordan used up all the power in his ring to transport the entire planet instead and fell to his doom. Luckily, Steam Lantern saved him.
