Prince Ragnar is the brother of Queen Iolande, ruler of Betrassus. He secretly came to resent this and believed it was his birthright to rule. After becoming friends with the Green Lantern Dulok, Ragnar became obsessed with attaining the power for himself so he could claim to be the most powerful warrior and ascend the throne. Once he learned from Hal Jordan on how a power ring chooses its bearer, Ragnar poisoned Dulok. However, Dulok's ring did not choose him. Ragnar made attempts to kill both Hal Jordan and Kilowog and bribed several castle guards. Kilowog faked his death and created an elaborate ring construct to draw out the killer. Ragnar took the bait and admitted he was one who murdered Dulok. When the ruse ended, Ragnar took Iolande hostage and attempted to flee the castle grounds. Iolande put on Dulok's ring and became a Green Lantern then easily defeated Ragnar. Ragnar was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower.
Ragnar was filled with rage and swore to destroy those who wronged him. A Red Power Ring soon appeared to Ragnar and he accepted. With it, Ragnar imprisoned Iolande and took over Betrassus. Along with Bleez, Veon, and Skallox, Ragnar battled Hal Jordan's group once more. When they reappeared attacking the Liberator with Queen Iolande, Ragnar led the Red Lantern forces against them. Ragnar defeated Iolande in combat but the energy from a prototype battery nullified his ring and boosted Iolande's. She easily defeated Ragnar. He retreated with the rest of the Red Lanterns.
