The Speed Force is an energy field that grants all speedsters their power. The Speed Force can be used the bend the laws of physics, even time travel. The speed necessary to time travel is fast enough to break the time barrier but one speedster can co-opt the Speed Force and prevent others from accessing enough energy to time travel. The Flash went back in time to stop the murder of his mother Nora Allen but created enough ripples to distort the timeline and alter history. Once Batman killed Professor Zoom, Flash was able to run fast enough to time travel and stop his past self.
