Abin Sur was a history professor on the planet Ungara until he was recruited to be the Green Lantern of Space Sector 2814. Decades later, Sur was forced to make an emergency landing on Earth and crashed in the California desert. He passed his ring onto Hal Jordan. In the Flashpoint timeline, Jordan did not receive the ring. Sur sent the ring into the space with his dying breath. The U.S. military confiscated Sur's body and his space ship. Eight years later, Hal Jordan was selected to pilot Sur's ship for a kamikaze mission.
