On one fateful day, a family of three were assaulted in Gotham City's Park Row. A desperate man named Joe Chill holds out a gun and demands the group's valuables. A scuffle follows. Within seconds, Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne were dead. Their son, Bruce Wayne has forever had his childhood stolen from him.

With the lingering feelings of outrage, despair, and vengeance, he persevered through the pursuit of justice and created a plan for the rest of his life. Once old enough, Bruce Wayne traveled the world and honed his body and mind to the highest physical peak. Along the way, he studied every known science including criminology, forensics, chemistry and psychology. Wayne trained under manhunters and martial arts masters and in time, became an unrivaled master, himself. Batman also became the master of disguise. Years later, Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham City. He took on what most critics called a figurehead position as joint CEO in Wayne Enterprises, as he maintained a public image of a billionaire playboy.

One day, Wayne investigated a den of bats on his property and discovered a system of caverns that stretched beyond his 150 acre estate into most of Gotham. He converted the caverns into his alter-ego's base of operations, complete with state of the art technology pinched secretly from Wayne Enterprises Research and Development. Chemistry and forensics lab, a high-tech computer database, a secret driveway, dock and shrines decorated the cave. Wayne then created a suitable identity for himself. It was something to use the darkness as a weapon, to strike fear in the hearts of criminals, Batman. He later joined with other heroes and formed the Justice League.

Batman was the second Justice Leaguer to respond to a breaking and entering at the Flash Museum. Batman and Cyborg determined the bombs were from the 25th century, Professor Zoom's time. With Green Lantern, Batman disconnected the bomb on Mirror Master's belt and left it to detonate in space. As the League left the scene, Batman assured the Flash that Professor Zoom's words were that of a classic sociopath. The Flash used his powers to change history and save the life of his mother, Nora Allen. As a result, the timeline shifted and led to a new reality. Instead of his parents, Bruce Wayne was killed by Joe Chill. Martha Wayne was driven insane and Dr. Thomas Wayne became Batman. Intrigued by Flash's claims, Batman helped him restore the timeline so that Bruce Wayne would live again. The Flash delivered a letter from Dr. Wayne to his son after talking about the whole fiasco. Bruce Wayne recognized the handwriting and was moved to tears. He thanked the Flash and remarked he was "one hell of a messanger."
