Fear Toxin is a chemical compound invented and used by the Scarecrow in gas form. When exposed to the toxin, victims are essentially paralyzed and forced to experience their worst fear. He devised a solid spherical form that emits the gas upon impact. The exact ingredients are mostly unknown but tetracycline, a broad spectrum polyketide antibiotic and protein synthesis inhibitor, and an aerosol are known to be used. On Halloween night, Scarecrow used the spheres on Nightwing and Green Arrow to save Solomon Grundy and Silver Banshee. Distracted by the gas, Banshee knocked Nightwing out. Some time later, Nightwing noted feeling stiff and like he woke up from a nightmare.
Batman and his allies later tried to raid Joker's hide out. Nightwing pursued Scarecrow into a House of Mirrors. Upon striking a mirror, Nightwing was gased with Fear Toxin. However, Nightwing conquered his fears at a young age and played coy to lure Scarecrow out. Scarecrow planned to dispense a drum of the toxin into the Gotham National Bank's vents but he was interrupted by the Joker who had a similar plan. Red Robin was exposed to the toxin while helping Batman fight Scarecrow at Gotham Museum. He saw some his worst fears in portraits on display, such as losing at video games, lot's of dirty laundry, zits, being the class dunce, and homework forever. He freaked out and threw a punch. As the effects of the toxin cleared, Red Robin realized he was in the parking lot and had knocked Scarecrow out.
