As a method of communicating with Batman and striking fear in the hearts of criminals, Commissioner Gordon had a modified searchlight installed on the roof of the Gotham Police Department headquarters. When turned on, it would project Batman's emblem into the sky. Batman would know there was a case Gordon needed help on and meet him on the roof. When the Joker took over the city with his Digital Laughing Virus, Gordon had officers burn wood in three metal barrels to illuminate the projector and simulate the Batsignal. During Penguin and Mr. Freeze's attack on Gotham, Commissioner Gordon shined the Batsignal into Killer Croc's face to blind him. Flash and Nightwing took the police officers and Gordon off the roof as Croc smashed the projector.
