Alfred Pennyworth lived through a varied career allegedly as an accomplished actor and served in military intelligence. Pennyworth later was employed as the Wayne family's butler. He became Bruce Wayne's legal guardian after the murder of his parents and reluctant ally. Pennyworth's formal demeanor tends to ground Batman. Despite being nearly killed by Bane in a battle in the Batcave, Pennyworth recovered and remained by Batman's side.
