Professor Nichols is a scientist and current head of the Acme Atomic Energy Laboratory. The week after the Laboratory opened a new wing dedicated to the science of total lunar eclipse, Nichols demonstrated his new Replica Ray to some colleagues. He successfully scanned and replicated a beaker. He believed the applications were endless and opened the floor for questions. The Joker, Penguin, Catwoman, and Riddler interrupted with the intention of stealing the ray. Nichols refused on the grounds it was too important to hand over to "filthy criminal types." The Joker doused Nichols and his colleagues with his Laughing Gas. While they laughed uncontrollably, the Riddler swiped the ray. Batman appeared and directed the scientists to head for cover.
