Alfred Pennyworth is the Wayne family butler and helped raise Bruce Wayne in his childhood. He is the only person privy to Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson's secret identities as Batman and Robin. As a result, he is often tasked with protecting it from others like Aunt Harriet. After some trials and tribulations, Wayne and Pennyworth formed a long standing agreement that if the latter were ever fired, it would only be because the former was under some evil mind control. Pennyworth would then prepare an antidote from Batman's precise instructions and list of ingredients. After an episode of Gotham Palace was disrupted by the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman, Pennyworth informed Wayne the Bat-Signal was being projected. They rushed past Aunt Harriet under the guise of night fishing. When she inquired about their secret, Pennyworth feigned ignorance and excused himself to polish the upstairs door knobs.

The next day, Aunt Harriet nearly discovered the secret entrance to the Batcave in Wayne's study. After she left, Wayne summoned Pennyworth inside and fired him for failing his duty to keep her out. Grayson was shocked. Pennyworth turned over his apron and stated it was an honor to serve Wayne. Grayson gave him a hug goodbye. He told Grayson he was sure he'd continue to make him proud then left. Pennyworth dressed in drab, tattered clothing and scoured the streets for ingredients for the mind control antidote. He rummaged through a trash can and found something of importance then continued on. With the antidote completed, Pennyworth disguised it in a bottle of champagne then disguised himself as a delivery man. He entered the Gotham Palace just as the battle between Batman and Robin and Catwoman's forces reached its conclusion. Batman accepted the bottle and read a congratulatory note about being Gotham's newest pop star. The antidote instantly neutralized the Bat-Anti-Antidote and Batman was soon cured of the spiked Batnip.

Once Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara left with Catwoman in their custody, Pennyworth revealed himself as the deliveryman. Batman explained his back up plan to Robin. Robin was amazed he was once again one step ahead. Batman realized he was manipulated by the Joker, Penguin, and Riddler into serving as a distraction while they conducted their daring crime spree unnoticed. They took off to defeat them. Pennyworth was reinstated at Wayne Manor and helped out at Aunt Harriet's surprise birthday party. However, just as the party started, the Bat-Signal shone again in the sky. Pennyworth subtly informed Wayne. He and Grayson took off to do some "skeet shooting" to Harriet's confusion.

Six months after Two-Face's initial capture, Bruce Wayne and Dick Grayson could not attend the annual millionaires' soiree ending in a midnight tour of Gotham City because of a conflict with one of their fishing trips. In their place, Harriet Cooper and Alfred Pennyworth would attend. Pennyworth thought it was very generous of Wayne. Cooper joked they were lucky a fishing trip came up and elbowed Pennyworth to his dismay. She didn't want to be late so she grabbed one of his arms and they ran off. However, the tour was a target of King Tut. One of his Tutlings rudely demanded Cooper's jewelry. She was shocked and fainted. Pennyworth caught her and admonished the Tutling. Luckily, Batman and Robin arrived to battle the criminals. Batman activated the Bat-Net on his Batmobile and told Pennyworth to evacuate the citizens off the bus. Pennyworth went last and jumped off with Cooper in his arms.

After King Tut's hapless alter-ego Professor McElroy was sentenced to 15 years with the possibility of parole for good behavior, Wayne had his friend and assistant to the assistant District Attorney Harvey Dent over for drinks. Pennyworth alerted Wayne of the Bat-phone on the sly. Wayne excused himself and Grayson for their weekly badminton lesson. Cooper took Pennyworth's tray and offered Pigs in a blanket to Dent. Later on, Pennyworth went to the Batcave at the tail end of a heated argument between Batman and Robin over Dent's possible role in the return of Two-Face. He tried to break things up but Batman grounded Robin. He stormed off to the Batpoles. Batman told Pennyworth to let him go because Two-Face had them all on edge and Robin just needed some fresh air. He mused he did, too, and got in the Batmobile. Batman paused, prompting Pennyworth to inquire if there was anything else. Batman revealed he was supposted to see Catwoman but he didn't want to lose focus because a man's good name was at stake. Pennyworth replied "Friends before females" to which Batman agreed.

Pennyworth went to Grayson's room with milk and cookies but was shocked to discover it was empty. He activated the Bat-homing beacon in Robin's utility belt then hailed the Batmobile with the top secret Wayne Manor extension. Pennyworth appeared on the dashboard's Alfred Cam then he alerted Batman about Grayson's disappearance. Batman was frustrated with the arrogance of youth but he was relieved to hear Pennyworth took precautions with the homing beacon. He sent Batman Robin's coordinates. He was horrified to see Robin was transformed into a two-faced maniac by Two-Face and turned away. Robin snapped at him asking if he never seen someone get up on the wrong side of the bed. Batman told him never to talk to Pennyworth like that. He asked Batman if he could be saved. To his relief, Batman successfully tested an antidote and restored Robin to normal. Robin quickly shared the intelligence he gathered about Dent, Hugo Strange, and Two- Face. Batman went to the Bat-Analyzer and Pennyworth explained he took the liberty of testing his costume for any foreign residue. They found traces of pool chalk exclusive to the Winning Pair Casino and raced off.

Months after Two-Face's next defeat, Dent's charity bachelor auction was held on the grounds of Wayne Manor. Harriet Cooper wondered if Dent would be auctioning himself. She elbowed Pennyworth and joked she might need to borrow some money. He was once again aghast of her innuendo.
