The Replica Ray is an invention of Professor Nichols. He designed it to scan an object and create an identical version. It also worked on organic beings but the duplicates were molecularly unstable and would expire after a time. He believed the applications were endless. After demonstrating the ray to some colleagues at the Acme Atomic Energy Laboratory, Nichols was paid a visit by the Joker, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman. He refused to hand over his invention to criminals. Joker doused the scientists with his patent Laughing Gas and Riddler took the Replica Ray with no resistance. Despite Batman and Robin's arrival, the villains got away in the Jokermobile. The Batmobile soon caught up to them but Riddler scanned a pothole and replicated it several times over. Eventually, the Riddler shot up the street with multiple potholes and created a trench to stop the Batmobile in its tracks. The Riddler was insulted that the Penguin only wanted to use the ray to multiply money, diamonds, and women.

Joker, Penguin, and Riddler settled on spiking Catwoman's Batnip and using the Replica Ray to create duplicates of themselves as part of a massive distraction. Batman and Robin eventually found them aboard an abandoned joint space station, unaware they were duplicates, and discovered they planned to use the Replica Ray to duplicate Earth so Joker, Penguin, and Riddler would each have a Gotham City to rule. After the villains were defeated, Batman decided to store the Replica Ray in the Batcave because it was too dangerous to fall into the wrong hands. According to the villains' plan, Batman fell prey to Catwoman's spiked Batnip and turned into an egomaniac. He used the Replica Ray on himself and started replacing people in key positions with his clones starting with Commissioner Gordon, Chief O'Hara, and Mayor Linseed. Robin allied with Catwoman but they were unable to cure Batman. They broke out Minstrel, Bookworm, Mad Hatter, Shame, The Archer, Louie the Lilac, King Tut, False Face, Egghead, Sandman, Mr. Freeze, Clock King, Black Widow, and Siren from Gotham State Penitentiary to take down Batman and his clones.

After a showdown at Gotham Palace, Alfred Pennyworth tricked Batman into taking an antidote to neutralize the Bat-Anti-Antidote he took as a precaution against Robin's intervention. The clones turned on him but before they could attack, they expired and were reduced to piles of yellow muck. Joker, Penguin, and Riddler raided museums and stole Gotham's most priceless treasures and irreplaceable artwork. Batman and Robin deduced what happened and confronted them along with Catwoman, who wanted revenge for being double crossed.
