Harvey Dent and Bruce Wayne were the best of friends during their college days at Gotham State University. That friendship lasted into the present day. To commemorate the first crook he ever put behind bars, Dent kept a memento from the Cohen counterfeit case. It was a silver dollar coin. Now District Attorney, Dent attended the demonstration of Hugo Strange's Evil Extractor at the Gotham State Penitentiary's Top Secret Prison Laboratory. Warden Crichton introduced him to Batman. They shook hands. Batman noted his perfect record for convictions. Dent quipped he couldn't do it if he didn't catch them first. Dent thought they made a pretty good team. Robin walked between them. Dent checked his watch and asked if it was past his bedtime. Robin crossed his arms. Crichton introduced Hugo Strange. He bowed and shared his theory about removing evil from a criminal's mind. Batman was intrigued but didn't believe in easy fixes on the road to the straight and narrow. Dent reminded Strange he still had to prove the Extractor worked.

Warden spoke into the intercomm and told McCarthy to bring in the prisoners. Dent flipped his lucky coin. Batman was surprised criminals weren't the only ones who were a superstitious lot. The Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Egghead, and Mr. Freeze were selected as the test subjects. Dent was eager to go to dinner with Bruce Wayne. Strange soon realized the criminals tried to overload the Extractor with their concentrated evil. Evil Essence erupted from the Extractor's Collection Vat and hit Dent despite Batman's best efforts to shield him then the Extractor blew up. Dent was transformed into a new super criminal named Two-Face and declared he was evil incarnate. Two-Face's first crime spree entailed a bank robbery, ambushing Batman and Robin in an alley, a high speed car chase, Two-Face shooting at a Batman monument face, putting Robin on a medieval rack, Robin and Batman restrained to a conveyor belt with a big buzzsaw blade at the end, Batman and Robin tied up on each side of a giant scale over a flame, a pendulum blade death trap, and a humongous double broiler. He was eventually captured and tossed in a paddywagon in a straitjacket.

Cosmetic surgery was scheduled at the Sisters of Perpetual Irony Hospital to cure Dent. At the unveiling of Harvey Dent's restored face, Chief O'Hara, Commissioner Gordon, Dick Grayson, and Bruce Wayne were present. Dent turned to Wayne and pointed out it wasn't like him to be speechless. He asked what his verdict was. The doctor handed Dent a mirror. Dent was happy to be whole again and sighed in relief. He asked how he could ever thank Wayne for his unwavering support. Wayne replied it was the least he could do for one of his closest friends. Grayson looked at Wayne. Gordon revealed Dent would be allowed to return to City Hall but as Assistant to the Assistant District Attorney. Dent let it sink in and accepted the decision. He vowed to do everything in his power to earn Gotham's trust again. However, he was holding onto his a lucky coin the whole time. In reality, Dent couldn't take being a peon in the District Attorney's office all over again.

The exposure to the Evil Essence was not removed by the surgery and soon Two-Face resurfaced and offered Dent a Faustian deal. Two-Face framed the super criminals of Gotham and used their stolen loot to finance his criminal coup while Dent convicted them and reclaimed his sterling reputation as District Attorney of Gotham City. Dent accepted the deal. Six months after Dent's surgery, Two-Face arranged for the theft of a bi-plane stolen by King Tut from the Amiable Skies Aviation Hangars and sent his henchmen Twin 1 and Twin 2 to the Pyramid Towers construction site to steal Tut's loot from a Nile Double-Decker Company robbery while Batman and Robin were distracted with helping the amnesiac and confused Professor McElroy. Gordon and O'Hara reported the stolen valuables from the midnight tour of Gotham and the bi-plane were all missing. Dent watched on the other side of the two way glass. Professor McElroy had no memory of what Tut did with it. O'Hara thought his answer was malarkey but Batman reminded him Tut committed the crime. Robin pointed out when McElroy was knocked on the head, he forgot everything he did as Tut.

O'Hara failed to extract a confession by force. While McElroy met his public defender, Gordon asked Dent outside in the hall if he thought he had a case. Dent was confident he did but confessed half of him wished he confessed so they could save the city the expense of a lengthy trial. During the trial McElroy, O'Hara was called to the stand. Lucilee Diamond, McElroy's public defender, asked him if McElroy ever broke the law when he was not King Tut. O'Hara was not sure and told her she would have to ask Batman. She asked O'Hara to confirm that when McElroy was not suffering the effects of a concussive state that brings on the King Tut identity, he was a mild-mannered, harmless member of society. O'Hara repeated the previous statement. Harvey Dent objected on the grounds that counsel was confusing the witness. Diamond quipped that was not hard to do. The judge overruled. Diamond asked him if he tried to extract a confession by bludgeoning McElroy to recreate a concussive state.

Dent objected and pointed out King Tut was on trial here, not the professor. O'Hara sobbed and confessed to hitting McElroy during interrogation. Diamond had no further questions and thanked O'Hara. O'Hara replied it was his honor to serve. From the gallery, Commissioner Gordon groaned. Dent called his next witness, Batman. Everyone, including Batman, was shocked. Dent asked Batman how he would rate King Tut as criminal masterminds go. Batman testified King Tut was one of his most deadly adversaries but believed with proper rehabilitation, Tut could someday be a productive member of society. Dent twisted Batman's words to make it an opinion that Tut had to be sent to prison in order to get the rehabilitation he needed. Before Batman could clarify himself, Dent cut him off and stated he had no further questions. He called Professor McElroy to the stand next. McElroy gasped. Dent summarized that McElroy stated for the court that he had no memory of his actions when King Tut takes over. McElroy confirmed he had none whatsoever. He added no one was more horrified by King Tut's actions than he was.

Dent asked him if it was true that without his expertise in Egyptology, Tut couldn't commit his crimes. McElroy supposed that was true. Dent concluded that Tut used McElroy's knowledge of his crimes, making the professor the real mastermind. McElroy was shocked and speechless. Batman and Robin exchanged looks in the gallery. Diamond lost the trial and McElroy was sentenced to 15 years with possible time off for good behavior. Two-Face forced Harvey Dent to set up a charity auction as a ruse to trap Bruce Wayne in a lie and prove he was Batman. Dent only agreed to because he didn't believe him as Wayne wouldn't keep anything that important from him. Harvey Dent chose to help organize a charity bachelor auction on behalf of the Society for Underprivileged Fraternal Twins, an organization that was important to him. The Winning Pair Casino was chosen for its association with two, the address of 2222 Janus Lane and Janus was a two-faced god.

Dent paid a visit to Wayne Manor. Wayne felt sorry for McElroy but knew justice was served. He told Dent he would be lead District Attorney again in no time. Dent credited Batman with nabbing the super crooks so he could send them to the state penitentiary. Grayson remarked it was same place Batman sent him. Dent told Grayson he hoped he didn't feel like a third wheel when he was around because he was Wayne's best friend. He handed his glass to Grayson. Dent wondered where he would be without Batman's help or Bruce's friendship during his dark time. Grayson guessed he would be robbing a bank. Aunt Harriet was charmed to have two handsome bachelors who were still best friends after all these years. She thought it was enough to give a girl the vapors. Dent confessed the other reason for his visit was to ask Wayne to take part in a charity bachelor auction on behalf of the Society for Underprivileged Fraternal Twins. Wayne thought it a worthy cause because the stigma of being the less-attractive twin was a heavy burden no one should have to bear. He agreed to do it.

Dent was thrilled and revealed the venue would be the newly refurbished Winning Pair Casino. Pennyworth leaned into Wayne and whispered there was a call from the Batphone. Wayne excused himself and Grayson for their weekly badminton lesson. Dent promised to be in touch. Aunt Harriet took Pennyworth's tray and offered pigs in a blanket to Dent. Bookworm plotted to raid the Gotham City Library's Irreplaceable Rare Books Vault. Two-Face learned of it and decided to steal rare books to help fund his master plan to transform the people of Gotham City with Evil Essence. He sent a world atlas filled with worms to the Gotham City Police Department headquarters with an explicit address to Batman. He detected several pages were missing, pages of different world capitals, and deduced the longitudes and latitudes to correspond to the library's classification method, the Dewey Decimal System. Batman used his encyclopedic knowledge of the card catalog to figure out the numbers corresponded to rare editions of The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Man in the Iron Mask, and A Tale of Two Cities.

After Bookworm was captured at the Gotham City Library, Robin was troubled by him not knowing anything about a clue being sent to the police. Batman suspected someone wanted them to catch him. Robin realized the rare books stolen from the library had themes of duality. Batman pointed out Tut's crimes, though Egyptian themed, also focused on the number two: the biplane and the double-decker bus. They were perplexed it all pointed to Two-Face despite Harvey Dent's rehabilitation. They headed to Two-Face's last known hideout, the abandoned sign factory on Gemini Drive. Two-Face felt victorious with the haul stolen from Tut and Bookworm, content it was enough to finance his plans for Gotham City. He knew time was against them and they had to abandon the hideout. Twin 1 wasn't so sure Batman and Robin were coming. Two-Face cocked his dual pistols at the twins and told them to get the lead out, or he would put the lead in. Batman and Robin burst in through glass.

Robin couldn't believe Two-Face was back despite Harvey Dent's restorative surgery. Batman added it shouldn't be possible. Two-Face flipped his coin and got the scarred face up. He ordered the twins to attack. They fought but Batman and Robin heaved them into each other. Two-Face fired at the ceiling. A giant #2 sign fell down. They dodged it but it fell over and pinned them. Two-Face joked they were outnumbered. Twin 1 readied a pipe. Two-Face grabbed his arm mid-swing and stated the coin decided their fate. He flipped the coin and they were spared. Twin 1 thought he was nuts and they owed it to every crime-abiding crook in town Batman and Robin. Twin 2 thought it was the ethical thing to do. Two-Face pulled out his guns and told them to shut up or else the coin would decide their fates, too. He told the twins to grab the loot then warned Batman to think twice before he tried to thwart his plans again. With some effort, Batman and Robin pushed the giant #2 away. Robin concluded Harvey Dent was back to his old tricks but Batman was still open to the chance one of Dent's enemies was the culprit.

They went to Gotham City Hall and confronted Dent in his office. Robin pointed out his face was normal. Dent asked to what he owed the unexpected visit. Batman apologized for the abrupt visit and informed him Two-Face was the mastermind behind King Tut's and Bookworm's latest crime sprees. Robin asked Dent where he was within the last two hours. Dent claimed he was in his office all night. Batman asked Dent to excuse Robin's over-zealousness and stated they could not rule anyone out currently. Dent understood and pledged his full cooperation. He wondered what kind of a twisted monster would threaten the reputation he worked so hard to rebuild. Batman promised they would not rest until they got to the bottom of the mystery. Dent could not wait to put the imposter behind bars. In the meantime, he needed to finalize the plans for his charity bachelor auction. He asked if their mutual friend Bruce Wayne told him about it. Batman stated his friendship with Mr. Wayne didn't extend to charity functions and bid Dent good night.

Batman and Robin made their way down the side of building. Robin wasn't convinced and knew Dent had to be involved with Two-Face somehow. Batman cited Dent had always been a loyal friend and he still had faith in him. Dent pulled his blinds, picked up the phone and dialed. He could not go on and insisted that Two-Face stop the madness at once. Two-Face reminded them of their deal. Dent pointed out Batman would eventually discover their secret. Two-Face was confident it would be too late and he would find out his. Dent hung up and sighed. Two-Face went to the abandoned Gotham Plastics factory where Hugo Strange was secretly rebuilding and improving his Evil Extractor and triggered a black out. Strange was annoyed with a sudden blackout and turned on a bunsen burner. He gasped as he came face to faces with Two-Face. Two-Face asserted they had unfinished business and grabbed him by the collar. Strange dropped the burner and screamed. After some coercion, Strange agreed to work with Two-Face. Robin was sure Dent was involved.

Despite Batman grounding him, Robin went on a stake out alone outside Gotham City Hall. He waited for Dent and followed him, leaping down onto the roof of passing delivery truck then a train roof. He followed Dent into a building and discovered a rebuilt Evil Extractor. Dent warned him to get out before it was too late. Robin was knocked out from behind. He woke up tied up in chair. He demanded the truth about Dent. Two-Face called him a useful idiot who served his purpose. Two-Face and Hugo Strange tested their evil extract formula on Robin and transformed him into a two-face. In the city, Robin caused property damage on buildings and cars, mostly breaking glass. Batman eventually knocked him out. Hugo Strange observed from Dent's car in an alley and told Two-Face, who was in the back seat, the formula seemed quite potent but much more would be needed. Two-Face already had a plan for that, the auction at Winning Pair Casino.

After Robin was cured of Evil Essence, Batman also took the liberty of testing his costume for any foreign residue. His cape contained traces of a fine blue chalk used by only one place in town, The Winning Pair Casino. Batman and Robin climbed down from the ceiling on rope onto the giant billiard table. Two-Face taunted Robin and observed his "sudden breakout" seemed to have cleared up. Batman declared they were done with his ghoulish games. Two-Face quipped if that were so, he shouldn't have come. He called out Batman in the corner pocket then pulled a lever. A giant poolstick lowered and breaked. Batman and Robin scattered and dodged the balls. Batman swung away and balanced atop the three ball. Batman pulled Robin aside just in time and they stood by corner pocket. The eight ball approached. On Batman's cue, they dove in the hole. The eight ball went down after them. Batman threw an exploding Batarang behind him. They felt the pulse of the explosion, tumbled out of the table, and landed on floor.

Two-Face had his henchmen Twin 1 and Twin 2 send invitations to the Joker, the Peguin, the Riddler, Egghead, Shame, Mr. Freeze, Clock King, and Catwoman to bid for the secret identities of Batman and Robin. Batman and Robin were tied to a giant silver dollar near a giant spike death trap. The coin was booby-trapped and any sudden movement could trigger it and they would be catapulted over those spikes. Robin gulped and figured Two-Face was giving them a 50-50 chance. Batman warned their weight would ensure that they fell face down on those spikes. Harvey Dent confirmed Batman was right. Batman told Dent it was not too late and asked him help them take down Two-Face. Dent admitted he was just guilty as him and told him he made a deal with Two-Face. Batman still believed in him. Dent called him a fool. Batman recalled Mr. Wayne had his face restored and he was reformed. Dent revealed the surgery only healed the scars on the outside and Two-Face was not kept at bay for long. He transformed back to Two-Face.

Batman realized the scars were only a physical manifestation of the Evil Extractor's gasses and Dent was living a double life the whole time. Two-Face retorted Batman was also living one. Robin didn't believe he knew Batman's secret identity. Twin 2 at operated a console and Two-Face's lift was moved up to Batman and Robin. Two-Face revealed his plan to use the auction to trap Batman and prove he was Wayne. Two-Face pointed out the always punctual Bruce Wayne had not shown up for his own auction which could only mean that he was indisposed as Batman currently. He pulled off Batman's mask. Dent was shocked. Two-Face assumed Robin was Wayne's youthful ward, Dick Grayson then put Batman's mask back on. Batman demanded to know what devilish diabolatry he devised for them next. Two-Face revealed he was going to auction off their secret identities. Twin 1 pulled a curtain and revealed several super criminals all seated like the game show Match Game. He started the bidding at $1 million.

Joker bid one million and was glad he had some spare change laying around between the couch cushions. Penguin told him to be quiet and countered $1.5. Riddler asked why they were like Two-Face's henchmen. He replied because they were all doing his bidding. Joker and Penguin growled. Riddler countered with $2 million. Catwoman swung in and bid $3 million. Penguin increased his bid to $4 million. The Evil Extractor started secretly gathering their Evil Essence as they argued. Tanks attached to the bi-plane Two-Face stole from King Tut were filled with the gas. Once they were filled up, Hugo Strange nodded to Two-Face. Catwoman had enough and declared Batman was hers alone to undo, when she saw fit and not before. She bid $5 million. Everyone gasped. Joker remarked that was a little rich for his blood and proposed they combine the pot and they could all get a peek. They all agreed and bid $10 million. They won. Two-Face collected the money and excused himself for another engagement. He paused and Dent apologized to Batman.

Two-Face went through with his plan and flew around in a bi-plane dousing the city in Evil Essence to turn everyone into Two-Faces, even dogs. Two nuns broke into a store. A drive-in theater was reduced to chaos and somehow the actors in the "Beach Party" movie became two-faced, too. The police tried to fend them off but O'Hara and the others were gassed, too. A driver started ramming other cars in reverse. Desmond Dumas watched from a roof and pleaded with citizens to head for cover but he was transformed by the gas, too. He threw his equipment off and ran. Batman and Robin tried to tail the bi-plane in the Batcycle while fending off two-faced people. Robin tried twice to cripple the plane with the Mini Batzooka but Two-Face's pilot skills were too good and he dodged every shot. Batman knew there was only one thing left to do. They used their ejector seats to get altitude and activated the Bat-boot jets. They didn't make it all the way and scrambled to the tail of plane, Robin missed but Batman grabbed his arm.

While Two-Face shot at Robin, Batman used the Bat-Laser to sever the tanks of Evil Essence from the plane. One landed in the harbor, and the other in the Gotham City Dump. Robin tricked Two-Face into shooting the propellers. Batman and Robin bailed and used their capes as gliders. The plane crashed into Lorenzo's Oil Refinery but set off a fatal chain reaction. Batman and Robin chased after him inside but quickly took cover behind the Bat-Shield to avoid Two-Face's gunfire. He vowed they would never take him alive. An explosion went off. Robin pointed out the refinery was going to blow. Batman elected to go after Two-Face alone and apply the antidote to restore Harvey Dent to normal. However, Batman took out the vial to learn it was cracked open during the mayhem. Robin pleaded with Batman not to go or he would certainly die. Batman refused to give up on Dent. Robin realized their friendship meant a lot. Batman confirmed that but told him it wasn't as much as his Robin's. He told Robin he wouldn't want anyone else at his side in the never ending fight against crime. He ordered him to move to safety. Robin complied and leaped down and ran outside.

Batman called out that as a duly deputized officer of the law and his friend, he implored Dent to fight back. Two-Face hit him from behind and remarked he detested cheap sentiment. Dent told Batman he was terribly sorry about everything. Two-Face told Dent he was weak and outlived his usefulness. Two-Face choked Dent and took over their whole body. Two-Face fired his gun at Batman but he was out. Batman remarked he was counting his bullets and quipped he was now on the auction block and his fists were the highest bidder. They traded punches. On the sly, Batman swapped Two-Face's coin with a blank to create an opening later. Batman soon decked Two-Face with an uppercut. Two-Face grabbed a pipe and swung as a vat exploded. Batman took it away and punched. Two-Face uppercut him, threw him into a big pipe, and kicked him before he could get up then gut punched him. Batman was then launched by an explosion. Two-Face held up a broken pipe for the final blow and bid Batman goodbye.

Batman pointed out he usually had to let the coin decide. Two-Face cursed him for being right and flipped his coin. The coin's face was blank. Two-Face was shocked and kept flipping the coin in frustration demanding it to tell him what to do. Batman implored Dent to fight. Dent started to regain control. Two-Face tried to choke Batman. Dent asserted Batman was his friend and believed in him when no one else would. Two-Face called him a fool to trust them. Dent declared there was no us anymore. Dent punched Two-Face and declared he was Harvey Dent, District Attorney, and he was bringing him to justice. They punched each other. Batman lost sight of them in an explosion. Harvey Dent stepped out of the smoke. Two-Face was gone. They shook hands then ran for it. Batman threw out a rope, Dent grabbed him, and they swung out just in time as a massive explosion rocked the refinery. Robin checked with Batman then asked about Two-Face. Dent was about to declare he was gone for good but he fainted. Dent was put in a straitjacket then wheeled into an ambulance.

The next day, Batman and Robin used the Batplane to deploy Bat-Evil-Essence Antidote Bombs to restore people back to normal. Warden Crichton observed Harvey Dent was a model prisoner. Months after Two-Face was defeated, Dent's charity bachelor auction was held on the grounds of Wayne Manor. Grayson wondered how Dent would act around them since he discovered their secret identities during Two-Face's spree. Wayne did not know what to expect. Pennyworth announced Dent's arrival. Dent thanked Wayne and told him he was once again indebted to him for his kindness. Wayne dismissed any debt and told him that was what old friends were for. Dent excused himself to head to the stage. Grayson was shocked he did not remember anything. Wayne theorized Dent repressed that memory of learning their secret. Aunt Harriet wondered if Dent would be auctioning himself. She joked with Pennyworth she might need to borrow some money and elbowed him. He was aghast. She told Wayne she was all a tingle but realized he was gone. Dent presented the first item up for auction, the most eligible bachelor in Gotham City, Batman. Everyone was surprised. Catwoman raised her hand for the first bid to everyone's surprise.
