The Lazarus Pit is an alchemical mix of acids and poisons that bubbles up from the Earth's crust at junction points of electromagnetic leylines crisscrossing the planet. Six to seven centuries ago, a man discovered such a pit and its amazing healing properties. The man took the name Ra's Al Ghul and named the pool the Lazarus Pit after the person who Jesus Christ resurrected from the dead. However, with every gift, there is a drawback. The stress of physical rejuvenation from the Lazarus Pit causes temporary insanity.
A Lazarus Pit is known to exist deep beneath League of Shadows headquarters on Infinity Island. After an incident involving Talia Al Ghul's mother, only Ra's Al Ghul was allowed to use the Lazarus Pit. On February 28th, Talia discovered her fiancee, Matthew Hagen, had cancer and wanted to use the Lazarus Pit to heal himself. Talia, a woman scorned, obliged his request then locked him in the pit for nearly six months. On August 25th, 23:16 Eastern Caribbean Time (ECT), Ra's Al Ghul emerged from the Lazarus Pit after dying again on August 19th. However, once Ra's left the room, Hagen, now Clayface, emerged from the same pit.
