In 1939, the archaeologist Dan Garrett discovered the Bialyan temple and the Scarab. The Scarab fused with Garrett. Assuming it was just a mystic artifact, Garrett used it to become the first Blue Beetle of modern times. After Garrett passed away, the Scarab was left to his protege Ted Kord. Kord realized the Scarab was alien technology and locked it away. Kord was still inspired by Garrett and became the second Blue Beetle, just without any superpowers.
