Six centurie ago, a Middle Eastern mystic discovered a Lazarus Pit, pools filled with an alchemical mix of acids and poisons excavated above the electromagnetic leylines crisscrossing the Earth, and with timely immersions, he could extend his life. He was a near immortal. After leaving the pool, the user endures a temporary uncontrollable rage. Taking on the name "Ra's Al Ghul" ("Demon's Head" in Arabic), he amassed wealth, power and knowledge. Ra's went on to found secret organizations such as the League of Shadows, established a global network, and secured control of Lazarus Pits situated throughout the world.

He endlessly worked to make his ultimate goal of returning the meccas of pollution to its natural state and re-establish a paradise on Earth. He watched as the world was blinded by greed and consumed by a culture of excess. Ra's lived for centuries, undaunted by his inability to save the world. Due to a side effect of immersing himself in the Lazarus Pit, Ra's became insane and his point of view became heavily biased. To acheive his dream, he was willing to sacrifice billions of innocent lives as the planet's resources have been ravaged to its breaking point. Ra's Al Ghul later became a member of the Light as one of its core seven members. He is the only enemy that knows the secret identities of Batman and Robin. Ra's admires Batman and believed he was the only one worthy of his legacy.

On February 28th, 22:02 Eastern Caribbean Time (ECT), Ra's gave Talia his blessing for her to marry Matthew Hagen, despite his objections. On August 19th, Ra's commandeered a satellite in Cape Canaveral and outfitted it with a diamond lens. He planned to use it to focus the rays of the Sun into a weapon and conduct surgical strikes on large population centers to eliminate the human surplus. In the meantime, rural and natural areas would be spared. Ra's offered Batman to join him and he'd spare Gotham City. Batman refused while Robin disarmed the satellite. Ra's fell to his death while trying to take back the lens. Ubu and Talia retreated with Ra's' body. On August 25th, 23:16 ECT, Ra's was resurrected by the Lazarus Pit located on Infinity Island. After coming to his senses, Ra's ordered Sensei to prepare "The Garden" and "The Serpent" but to to activate them yet. Some minutes later, Ra's returned downstairs to encounter Clayface. Upon learning it was what remained of Matthew Hagen of the League of Shadows, Ra's employed a post hypnotic suggestion to neutralize Clayface. He then had Clayface sent to Batman.

He secretly worked with Lex Luthor to reunify North and South Rhelasia for the Light. He was present in Taipei and met with Cheshire and Sportsmaster after the former was extracted from a holding cell. Ra's was then observed by Red Arrow, who was discovered and dealt with. After a treaty was signed between the Rhelasian nations, Ra's met with Luthor and celebrated their victory. On January 1st, Ra's was present with other members of the Light at Project Cadmus to take what was needed before the Justice League arrived. He personally suggested they take Roy Harper. On June 19th, Team Year Six, Ra's Al Ghul attended the Santa Prisca summit. He discovered Tigress' ruse and removed her Glamour Charm, revealing Artemis. However, it was part of the Team's plans to destroy the Reach and the Light's alliance. Black Beetle stabbed Ra's in the back and left him for dead. Ubu retrieved Ra's and left the summit, declaring his master would be resurrected.
