The Purists are a secret society who consider themselves the direct descendents of the original Atlanteans and attempt to scare anyone they consider impure into leaving Poseidonis. They consider pure to be those who possess only human features. In September, their clashes escalated rapidly into violence and intimidation due to a plan initiated by Ocean-Master to cleanse the country of impure. On September 4th, they branded Topo with the Atlantean ancient runes for "impure." The Purists' influence led to unrest at the Conservatory of Sorcery, where several students were secretly members. On September 6th, 20:09 UTC-2, the Purists met with Ocean Master, who announced with King Orin absent, it was time to purge Poseidonis of the impure. At 23:45 UTC-2, they infiltrated the royal palace and confronted Queen Mera. Mera was rendered unconscious and taken to S'atiroman Cave.
On September 7th, 01:31 UTC-2, the Purists ambushed Aqualad, Superboy, and Miss Martian at Old Roman's Trench. The Purists were routed by La'gaan, Garth, Blubber, Lori Lemaris, King Sha'ark, and Tula. However, Ocean-Master's mystic attack severely weakened them and the Purists rallied back. Topo generated a giant ink cloud and in the confusion, Superboy defeated the Purists. One managed to flee and was followed by Miss Martian back to S'atiroman Cave. The Purist, Ronal, overheard Ocean-Master's plan to use the Purists to cause other city-states to rebel against King Orin and allow him to take over Atlantis in the chaos. Ronal switched sides and was the only Purist to be pardoned by Orin.
