At some point, Lex Luthor took an interest in a young man confirmed to be a meta-human with self-healing abilities named Juan Cordero. Luthor found his mother a job at Lexcorp and made sure his sisters got into the best schools but never asked for anything in return. Cordero asked what he could do and fell for Luthor's stories. He even wished he had a father like Lex Luthor. He showed him Match and claimed he reached out to Superman and Superboy for help but was rejected. Cordero was enraged when Superman and Superboy got Luthor ousted from the United Nations in February Team Year Nine. He believed they twisted the truth and that Superboy was an ungrateful jerk who betrayed his own father. Cordero volunteered to be the son Superboy failed to be and to do whatever it took to serve and avenge Luthor. After several surgeries he gladly suffered through, Cordero was given a metal body but it needed a power source to be able to kill Superboy once and for all. The Kryptonite stolen from the kidnapped Queen Perdita Vladek was used to power Juan Cordero's metal body. He took on the code name Metallo.

On November 11, after 22:33 UTC+2, Team Year Ten, Metallo approached Superboy and Match inside the Lexcorp Robotics Factory in Madinat Altharwati, Greater Bialya. Match collapsed in Superboy's arms from exposure to Metallo's Kryptnite. He called Superboy an ingrate then introduced himself. At 22:42 UTC+2, Metallo had the weakened Superboy by the throat. He felt satisfied but admitted he thought Luthor's plan was needlessly complicated. He reaffirmed he trusted Luthor implicitly then told Superboy about his origins. Metallo proceeded to choke Superboy to death with both hands but Miss Martian arrived and used telekinesis to shatter his fingers then rip the Kryptonite from his chest. Devastation called her hypocrite for saving her husband but letting Metallo die. She revealed he could not live without the Kryptonite as a power source. Miss Martian chose to leave it with him. She reached out to Halo for a Boom Tube.
