William Hayes embraced his inner demons and sought great power but sacrificed the only person he loved, his sister Greta Hayes, in order to become pure of heart to wield it. He took the name Harm, broke into museum, and stole the Sword of Beowulf on the night of October 31st. After taking out police and a curator on site at the museum, Harm went around New York City in search of a challenge. He found Artemis and Zatanna. Upon observing their fighting skills, Harm concluded they were trained by Green Arrow and Zatara and vowed to kill them, as well.
Artemis and Zatanna were unable to neutralize Harm and opted to followed a mysterious girl. They arrived on the roof of Harm's home. Angered by this development, Harm quickly rendered them unconscious with the Sword of Beowulf and tied them up for interrogation. Zatanna escaped thanks to the girl and helped Artemis get free. Harm began to see this girl, his dead sister, and believed it to be nothing more than an illusion spell. However, she was real and a ghost. At her grave, Hayes took away Harm's purity. Without it, the Sword of Beowulf rejected him and sheathed itself. Harm was left completely helpless and defeated by Artemis and Zatanna. Zatanna binded him with his clothing just as the police arrived to investigate an explosion set off by Artemis.
