When Ares absorbed the psychic energy generated by the nuclear missile fired at Themyscria, he gained a multitude of powers, including control of the dead. He raised the legions of Amazons who died over the centuries and forced them to fight their own kind. Even the recently killed Alexa was present. Since she died a recently, Alexa was able to retain some of her humanity and tried to tell Artemis how to break Ares' hold over them. An incantation she memorized from one of her books was that was required. After Artemis repeated, the zombies regained control of themselves and went after Ares. He quickly dismissed them and returned them to their graves.
