A harpy was any one of the mainly winged death-spirits. Her head is recognizably a Gorgon, with goggling eyes, protruding tongue, and tusks. They are portrayed as agents of punishment who abducted people and tortured them on their way to Tartarus. They lived on Strophades. The harpies were said to be three sisters: Aello, Celaeno, and Ocypete.
Phineas, a king of Thrace, had the gift of precognition. Zeus was angered that Phineas revealed the future to others and punished him by exiling him to on an island with a buffet of food which he could never eat. The harpies always stole the food out of his hands right ruined the rest. He was rescued by Jason and the Argonauts.
Their resting place was the entrance to Tartarus. Centuries later, Ares tried to open the entrance to Tartarus. When Diana intervened, Ares uttered a Latin incantation that awakened the harpies. The harpies moved to kill everyone else in the room, even Ares' cult. Diana and Steve Trevor managed to kill them, with brute force and a grenade, respectively.
