Eris is the goddess of war and stands for contention, discord, rivalry, and strife. She is also the sister of Ares. Together, they delight in human bloodshed. It is said that even after everyone has left the battlefield, Eris stays behind and takes in the death she witnessed. Because of this she is often mistaken as a spirit who haunts the battlefield.
It is said that Eris' disagreeable nature was the reason she was the only goddess not to be invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis. She went anyway and was refused admittance. In a rage, she threw a golden apple into the crowd of the goddesses. It was inscribed "To the fairest." Three goddesses laid claim to it and created a rivalry that would influence the Trojan War.
When the Amazons revolted against Ares, Queen Hippolyta raced to fight her would-be suitor. Eris intervened but Hippolyta used her Lasso of Truth to ride Eris to Ares' position. In the aftermath, Hippolyta decapitated Eris with her tiara.
