Ares is the god of war and was often an outsider among the other gods of Mount Olympus. Ares feeds on the psychic energies of war and gains more power. He enslaved the Amazons and made them loyal servants of Zeus. Ares lusted after their queen, Hippolyta and raped her. In 2814 B.C., the Amazons revolted and he raised an army of barbarians, beasts, and demons. When Hippolyta decapitated their bastard son, Thrax, Ares was defeated. Before Hippolyta could execute him, Zeus intervened along with Hera. Ares was stripped of his power when he was bound by bracelets by his father. In essence, he was a mortal and prisoner of the Amazons.

For centuries, Amazons took turns keeping watch over Ares' prison cell. Hippolyta often used him as a symbol of the nature of man: wicked, disloyal, and untrustworthy. However, he managed to seduce another Amason, Persephone. Together, they hatched a plan to free Ares. When the Amazons were distracted with a tournament to determine who would escort Steve Trevor back to the outside world, Persephone killed her partner Alexa and fled Themyscira with Ares. Ares knew that his uncle, Hades, was the only god who would agree to disengage the bracelets and journeyed to Tartarus.

After being freed, Ares came to realize that the United States of America would be the most prime catalyst for war and raised his army at Washington D.C. with the intention to draw enough power to conquer man and the gods. The government's nuclear missile made Ares as strong as any of the gods, even Zeus. Diana used her wits to switch places with Ares at the last second and he was struck by his own thunderbolt. Diana delivered the final stroke and decapitated Ares. In death, he became a servant of Hades.

As do all the Olympian gods, Ares possesses tremendous strength. Moreover, he is a master of conflict and strategy, and has complete command over any weapon. His armor is virtually indestructible. He can regenerate his physical being into any form he wishes and can teleport himself and others, as well as alter reality to whatever he desires. Being a god, he is also immortal.
