The Spirit Totem is one of five Anansi Totems built by the trickster god Anansi. It was made with a type of stone indigenous to the M'Changa Province in Zambesi, Africa. He gave the totem to a warrior named Tantu and in exchange, the village of Zambesi would worship him. The totem represents the element of spirit. It grants weaer access to the "Ashe," or life force, of the animal kingdom. Thus, the wearer can use the powers of any animal he or she can conjure up such as the speed of a cheetah, the agility of an antelope, or strength of an elephant. A person of great strength can use the totem to summon many at once. The totem passed from generation to generation. Each person selected was given the sacred obligation of protecting Zambesi. At age four, Kuasa was chosen to be next to possess the Spirit Totem and succeed her mother. However, a local warlord had Zambesi raided. Kuasa's father was executed and the village was burned to ash and cinder. Kuasa's mother fled with the totem and her second daughter.

The totem was classified as a "family heirloom" that came with the unnamed infant later named Mari McCabe by her foster parents, Chuck and Patty. All they knew was the totem was an Anansi Totem and it belonged to the infant's mother. They waited until Mari was old enough to give the totem to her. Patty gave the totem to Mari when she was 10 years old. Patty revealed she had a feeling that one day, the totem would help Mari find the answers to all her questions. At some point, she learned how to utilize its power. After being bailed out of jail, the D.O.C. guard on duty, Hauser, offered McCabe $20 then $50 because he forgot to buy a present for his wife's birthday. McCabe declined his offers. Kuasa coveted the totem and learned it was still in Mari McCabe's possession. In order to keep Zambesi "safe," she had struck bargains with others who coveted the totem. Sensing Kuasa's presence, the totem activated and bonded to McCabe. She hired three gang bangers to steal the totem but McCabe used its power to take them out.

Professor Macalester promised to get Kuasa the totem in exchange for having his next expedition fully funded by her. When McCabe went to see Macalester a second time, Kuasa arrived with two armed men and demanded the totem or she would be killed for it. Mari McCabe awoke in Zambesi. Kuasa explained they were sisters and told the history of Zambesi and the totem. McCabe refused to surrender the totem and tried to run but Kuasa's men grabbed her. Kuasa used a spider, traditionally the true form of Anansi, to remove the totem through its bite. The bond was soon broken after nightfall. Kuasa removed the totem in triumph from McCabe after she collapsed. McCabe was woken up by Animal Spirits who asked her to stop "the pretender" and implored her to embrace her calling. She returned to the village and infected Kuasa with the same spider's poison. McCabe took back the totem and returned to Detroit. While having a moment with Chuck, McCabe saw the totem glowing. She went outside and spoke to Arrow and Flash.
