Sarajevo is part of a valley within Bosnia. Having been populated by various peoples, it didn't evolve into a city until the 15th century when the Ottoman Empire occupied the area in 1461. In 1697, during the Great Turkish War, Prince Eugene of Savoy of the Habsburg Monarchy led a raid on Sarajevo and left it in ruin. The Austria-Hungarian Empire annexed it in 1908. It became a grand industrial experiment to create a modern city but after another fire, it was merged with Ottoman and Western architecture. On June 28, 1914, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife were assassinated in Sarajevo and served as the spark to begin World War I. Following the World Wars, the city became part of Yugoslavia. Today, Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It has a reported population of 305,242 people in the four municipalities that make up the city and is famous for religious diversity. Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism all co-exist with each other here.
