Dick Grayson was an eight year old star in his family act, "The Flying Graysons" who performed for Haly's Circus. Grayson was trained as a toddler and exhibited a natural ability. On one fateful night, he overheard crime lord Anthony "Boss" Zucco arguing with Mr. Haly for extortion money. Haly refused and Zucco randomly chose to sabotage the Grayson's props. Grayson and Gotham City's elite watched in horror as his parents fell to their deaths. Guilty for being unable to do anything, Grayson was lost. That is until Gotham's philanthropist, Bruce Wayne decided to adopt him. Grayson was frustrated with Wayne's late hours and tried to solve his parents' murder and encountered Batman. Together they found Zucco but he died of a heart attack.

Batman saw a kindred soul in Grayson and revealed his secret to him. Grayson took up Batman's offer and became Robin, Batman's partner. As an acrobatic prodigy, Robin perhaps exceeded even Batman in agility and became his trusted partner. Even though Wayne never formally adopted Grayson, this was the closest thing to having a son. After helping found the Teen Titans, Robin concluded that he needed to establish himself as a hero in his own right. Batman obliged this thought by firing Robin. He accepted the decision and went forward in crafting a new persona. Based on Batman and a Kryptonian legend, Nightwing was born. He armed himself with a worthy utility belt: regurgitant gas pellets, smoke capsules, acetylene torch, flexi-cuffs, metal knuckles, Batarangs, Wing Dings, stun gun, and Escrima sticks. Despite appearances, Nightwing retained his cheerful and chatty demeanor from his days as Robin.

Soon after, Nightwing ceded the codename of Robin to Jason Todd and offered his advice and experience if Todd ever wanted it. After the Titans disbanded, Nightwing pursued a solo career and moved to Bludhaven. Some years later, Nightwing received intelligence on a new Red Hood and made the trip to Gotham. He found Batman at Gotham Bay fighting an Amazo. Nightwing attempted to scramble Amazo by jamming two rods into its ears but only angered it further. After Amazo was destroyed, he and Batman proceeded to interrogate a trio of captured thieves only to watch as they were assassinated by Red Hood. During a second pursuit of Hood after a botched weapons shipment, Nightwing was injured in an explosion in a mass transit hub. While going over footage in the Batcave, he noticed how well trained Hood was after he sliced a strong cable line in mid-leap before it went taut. Batman thanked Nightwing for his help and asked Alfred Pennyworth to escort him home to recover. In the aftermath, Nightwing was back in action and listened in on Black Mask's investigation proceedings.
