A family of three walked home from a movie theater in Gotham City's Park Row. The couple's son mimics a scene from "The Mask of Zorro." They take a wrong turn into an unlit alleyway. A man with a gun demands the group's valuables. A scuffle follows. Within seconds, Dr. Thomas and Martha Wayne are dead. Their son, Bruce Wayne has forever had his childhood stolen from him. Bruce became obsessed with avenging his parents' murder and created a plan for the rest of his life.

At age 14, Bruce Wayne traveled the world and honed his body and mind to the highest physical peak. Along the way, he studied every known science including criminology, forensics, chemistry and psychology. Wayne trained under manhunters and martial arts masters and in time, became an unrivaled master, himself.

Years later, Bruce Wayne returned to Gotham City. He took on what most critics called a figurehead position as joint CEO in Wayne Enterprises, as he maintained a public image of a billionaire playboy. All the while, he stalked the night as a nameless vigilante. He struggled to win every fight, intent on trying to find a way to strike fear from the start. While bleeding away in his study, a bat crashed through his window. Wayne investigated the den of bats and discovered a system of caverns that stretched beyond his 150 acre estate into most of Gotham. He converted the caverns into his alter-eog's base of operations, complete with state of the art technology pinched secretly from Wayne Enterprises Research and Development. Chemistry and forensics lab, a high-tech computer database, a secret driveway, dock and shrines decorated the cave. Wayne then created a suitable identity for himself. It was something to use the darkness as a weapon, to strike fear in the hearts of criminals, Batman.

In the early years, Batman was aided by his confidantes, Alfred Pennyworth and Dr. Leslie Thompkins. He soon became the ward of an orphan named Dick Grayson. At age nine, Grayson was first of Batman's partners. Originally an aerial performer, Grayson was personally trained by Batman and soon donned a costume of his own, Robin. Batman also befriended Gotham City's Police Commissioner James Gordon. Though Gordon didn't approve of Batman's methods, he recognized that Gotham would need all the help it could manage as the city began to witness the advent of bizarre monstrosities and murderous psychopaths in addition to the corrupting force of organized crime already present. Batman was unwittingly linked to crime in an unending cycle of violence. During a botched robbery at the Ace Chemical Plant, Batman failed to save the alleged ringleader Red Hood. He slipped into a vat of acid and chemicals and later became the Joker. The recruitment of Grayson to be his crime fighting partner, Robin, helped Batman in various manners. Years later, Batman found himself face to face with an orphan named Jason Todd in Crime Alley. Todd was attempting to steal the tires off the Batmobile.

Batman took him in and trained him to become the next Robin. Three years later, while in Sarajevo tracking Ra's Al Ghul, Robin was kidnapped by the Joker. Batman raced to save Robin in time but failed by just seconds. He cradled his dead partner in his arms. Batman soon responded by beating Joker so badly he had to wear a body cast for six months. After the Joker murdered Jason Todd and crippled Barbara Gordon, Batman operated alone and struggled with his greatest failures by staying resolved in the face of the moral abyss. Five years and one costume later, Batman unknowingly reunited with Jason Todd while chasing down thieves in Gotham Bay. He and Nightwing caught an exotic piece of cargo, an Amazo. When an explosive magnetic Batarang and assault on the senses failed, Batman managed to slap plastique on Amazo's eyes and blew it up. While interrogating the thieves, Batman gave chase to Todd who presented himseld as the new Red Hood. He became concerned after connecting Hood to an increase in drug trafficking and decrease in other crime.

After listening to a bug in Black Mask's office, Batman intercepted a weapons shipment with Nightwing. They gave chase to Red Hood and witnessed his familiar skill sets. Upon analyzing footage, Batman was shocked when Hood called him "Bruce" before escaping. He caught up with Hood and saved his life from the Fearsome Hand of Four. Batman offered his help to Hood but was declined. He then noticed one of the Hand's weapons covered in blood. Upon analyzing it in the Batcave, Batman's assumption was proven: Jason Todd was still alive. Under the veil of night, Bruce Wayne and Alfred Pennyworth excavated Todd's grave and discovered a high latex doll. Angered by his lack of focus, Batman flew to Ra's Al Ghul's estate and interrogated him, learning of his former ward's resurrection. On his way home, Batman concluded Todd was turning his teachings on him but was interrupted when Pennyworth informed him of a police standoff on the Gotham Bridge. The Joker was about to light several mobsters on fire but Batman released a payload of flame retardant.

Batman was unable to extract the Joker before Red Hood made his move. He was forced to meet with Hood in Crime Alley for a final showdown. Batman still proved a superior fighter but Hood revealed his real intention, to avenge his murder. If Batman didn't kill Red Hood, then Hood would kill the Joker. Batman refused to do any and utilized a hidden Batarang from his glove to disarm Hood. Hood initated a back up plan and activated a timed explosive. Batman survived and only found the Joker, still alive. Upon returning to the Batcave, Pennyworth asked if he should remove the Robin costume that once belonged to Jason Todd. Batman declined stating this changed nothing and went back on patrol.
