A Middle Eastern mystic discovered a Lazarus Pit, pools filled with an alchemical mix of acids and poisons excavated above the electromagnetic leylines crisscrossing the Earth, and with timely immersions, he could extend his life. He was a near immortal. After leaving the pool, the user endures a temporary uncontrollable rage. Taking on the name "Ra's Al Ghul" ("Demon's Head" in Arabic), he amassed wealth, power and knowledge. Al Ghul went on to found secret organizations, established a global network, and secured control of Lazarus Pits situated throughout the world. He endlessly worked to make his ultimate goal of returning the meccas of pollution to its natural state and re-establish a paradise on Earth. He watched as the world was blinded by greed and consumed by a culture of excess.

Ra's Al Ghul lived for six centuries and was undaunted by his inability to save the world. Due to a side effect of immersing himself in the Lazarus Pit, Ra's became insane and his point of view became heavily biased. To acheive his dream, he was willing to sacrifice billions of innocent lives as the planet's resources have been ravaged to its breaking point. In recent times, he became unsure of his immortality and child, Talia Al Ghul, and sought out a male heir to his empire. He chose Batman and engineered a kidnapping of Robin and Talia as a test. Al Ghul strode into the Batcave and presented Batman with this new case to solve. Batman journeyed with him across Europe and Asia but deduced the ruse and refused Al Ghul's offer. The two became sworn enemies since then.

During the final days of Jason Todd's career as Robin, Ra's Al Ghul initiated his latest goal, to topple the economy of Europe, which included blowing up several banks. With Batman and Robin in pursuit, Al Ghul hired the Joker to serve as a distraction and paid him extremely well for a simple wild goose chase. However, he underestimated Joker's insanity and was filled with remorse when Robin was murdered. As penance, Al Ghul vowed to never war with Batman again and rectify the situation. He arranged for the theft of Jason Todd's body at the United States Embassy of the Republic of Bosnia and Herzegovina and immersed it in a Lazarus Pit. Todd was resurrected but he returned damaged and escaped. Al Ghul had his army search for Todd for months but declared him dead again. Five years later, Batman discovered the fake body of Jason Todd and confronted Al Ghul. He complied, called off his guards, and revealed his role in Todd's resurrection to Batman.
