Amazo is a highly advanced cybernetic android built by a rogue scientist named Professor Anthony Ivo, a man obsessed with gaining immortality. Special absorption cells throughout Amazo's body would replicate special abilities of any super powered beings in the immediate proximity. After an incident with the Justice League of America, Ivo sent the android to destroy them. Much like a human, Amazo can be stunned by attacks on the senses. The JLA defeated it by negating its powers and crash its systems. Over the years, it has been reactivated and several other Amazo's built.
One such next generation Amazo was procured by Black Mask. In an attempt to study the landscape of Gotham, Red Hood ordered five thieves to steal from a shipment arriving in Gotham Bay. Batman gave chase and their cargo was jarred loose. Amazo was activated and fought both Batman and Nightwing. They soon learned this version was preprogrammed with at least Superman's powers. Ultimately, Batman managed to slip plastique over its eyes and blew its head off. He then propped the body and used it to interrogate the thieves. After failing to capture Red Hood, Batman confiscated Amazo. This fiasco ultimately cost Black Mask millions of dollars.
