In the 1870's, an agricultural community was nicknamed Hollywood after a the Toyon red berries that grow in the area. The term was coined by H.J. Whitley when he was visiting with his wife Gigi in 1886 on their honeymoon. He soon arranged to buy a 500 acre ranch from E.C. Hurd. Gossip and speculation on Whitley's intention to develop spread quickly. After a few years, it turned into a small rural suburb. Whitley rallied to have all modern ammenities added to the region, such as electricity despite having only a population of 500. Banks, roads, hotels, and a water supply followed.
In 1903, Hollywood was incorporated as a municipality. Film making first began in 1906 when the Biograph Company shot "A Daring Hood-Up in Southern California." Soon after studios were bing constructed and the first full-length film, "In Old California" was made in 1910. With the four major studios (Paramount, Warner Bros., RKO and Columbia) setting up Hollywood studios, the suburb quickly developed into a movie production center by 1920. Television and music followed in the 1940's. The Hollywood Walk of Fame was opened in 1958 to celebrate stars based on their legacy of movie roles and charitable acts.
In the 1970's Hollywood was established as a district northwest of downtown Los Angeles. It has no mayor, and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce appoints their own honorary mayor. The 45 foot tall Hollywood Sign adorns the Hollywood Hills since 1923. The city became numb towards murder and corruption. Beyond the pool of talented and beautiful people, the lure of fame and fortune tends to manifest the worst aspects of people. One such act was when Aimee Brenner had her own father killed so she could use his inheritance money to leave and start a new life. However, the Spectre discovered her plot and avenged the death of Foster Brenner.
